I recently installed my Vonage phone adapter (RT31P2), and got my internet to work through it, but cannot get a phone light on Phone1 or Phone2 to light up (and consequently, no dial tone). I have tried the Troubleshooting topics on Vonage.com, including "How do I reboot my phone adapter" and "I don't hear a dial tone. What should I do". I followed instructions in both topics, still no dial tone.

Also tried calling customer service. After 45 minutes with India, my frazzled nerves told me to try this forum.

I have wireless broadband (satellite thru Antelecom.net), connected to an Agere Systems PCI Modem, connected to the RT31P2 phone adapter, connected to a phone (I keep trying a both a corded and a cordless phone).

Router version is 1.27.01, voice version is 2.0.13 (Llb).

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

How does your computer connect to the wireless Internet service? Does an antenna go directly into the Agere PCI device?

What do you have connected to the RT31P2's WAN port?

Depending on the answers to the questions above, you may have to put an ethernet card in your computer, connect it to the RT31P2's WAN port, then enable Internet Sharing on your Wireless connection in Windows.

Bear with me, I'm not a computer tech...

I have a (satellite) dish on my roof that gets the internet signal. A line runs from that dish into my modem. Another line then runs from my modem into the WAN port on my router.

Coming out of the router, I have a line plugged into Ethernet Port 1, running to my computer and I also have a phone line out.

One other thing I forgot to mention was that the speed with the RT31P2 is incredibly variable (I couldn't even get it to complete the Voip speed test - keeps hanging up on the download part). I've had to switch back to my old router to surf the net for tech advice.

Hmm..., and what results do you get on the VoIP Speed Test when you are directly connected to the old router?

Very Happy Lol
Shrieks of joy!!!!!

OK...just to archive what solved the problem after 4 phone calls and speaking to about 6 different techs (5 Indian, 1 American - God bless you Mike who solved this problem!!!).

The final fix involved connecting the routers in series:
modem > WRT54G (my old router) > RT31P2 > phone

***AND*** it involved a firmware update. After both of those things occurred, I GOT A PHONE LIGHT AND A DIAL TONE! Woooo-hooo!! I think I just peed my pants, I'm so ecstatic.

For some reason, when the RT31P2 was the only router used, the speeds were so slow that the firmware update was timing out. So, the tech suggested wiring in series, and the speeds improved enough that the firmware update went through. And after it went through, the heavens shone down and said "Let there be a phone light".

Hooray!

It sounds like your problem may have something to do with the one I had several months ago. If I connected the RT31P2 directly to my D-Link DCM-200 cable modem, the connection would just wink in every couple seconds, but never go solid. If I connected a switch or router in between, it worked fine. Maybe the RT31P2's WAN port is somehow "weak," and that causes it to not speak to certain ethernet devices?

Anyway, your current setup should work fine. However, I recommend that you look into enabling QoS on the WRT54G in order to give priority to the voice traffic. That will make your phone calls work better while you're uploading stuff from the computer.
