Citron On E911 120-Day Compliance: Ain't Gonna Happen

Vonage CEO Jeffrey Citron said yesterday that in his view, the "hundreds and hundreds" of logistical issues involved in universal deployment of FCC-mandated E911 access by Vonage and other service providers will keep such access from being deployed within the 120-day deadline given by the FCC on May 19.

Citron said that a key issue is what to do with rural subscribers. While these might be subscribers on the fringes of metro areas, they may still live in areas that are hard to get to and expensive to equip. "If you have one rural customer in one market, what do you do," Citron asked. "And there is no guidance inside the order to figure that out."

The Vonage chief added that because Vonage and other Voip providers want to avoid a rural-urban access divide, additional discussions with the FCC are in order.

Citron cited historical precedent as another indication that universal E911 over Voip won't happen by September 19. He noted that only 40 percent of cell lines and 93 percent of households have E911 access, and that number has only been reached after decades of infrastructure building. "So we are trying to resolve (E911 Voip) in 120 days, and that is a real challenge," he said.

At least he's being realistic about it and not trying to blow sunshine up our asses on the issue. 120 days to impose something that cell phone carriers still have issues with after 10 years is beyond ambitious. Sometimes I wonder about the FCC. I am 200% behind the idea of e911 for ANY Voip provider but unless the FCC steps in and mandates to everyone involved to fix this is 120 days, it isn't going to happen.

I may just be really lame for having figured this out, but if the deadline is "120 days from May 19", then the deadline date is September 16, NOT September 19.

From its inception the FCC was never in it to protect the interests of citizens, but instead to protect the interests of government and entrenched commercial entities.

Vonage bucks the FCC at every opportunity so is it any wonder that the FCC ruling gave a ridiculously short period of time to get E-911 working?

Of course when you factor in the opinions of the incumbent phone carriers you can see precisely what they and the FCC are trying to do, that is to saddle the Voip providers with mandated regulatory fees, destroying for example Vonage's ability to offer competitive pricing.
