PostPosted: Sun Jun 05, 2005 3:58 pm    Post subject: Linksys PAP2 and port forwarding Reply with quote Back to top

Hey.. well I'm new to all of this and i just got a Vonage Linksys PAP2 phone adapter and once i installed it.. it worked i made a few calls and everything but the next day it didn't work at all.....um my cable modem router thing is an Arris Touchstone

i don't know why but i have a feeling that some of this might have to do with the fact that inorder to install the phone adapter with the ethernet cord i had to make my router use the USB ports... does that matter? and if it does matter than why was i able to call the first day and now nothing?

as you can see i dont really know much about any of this stuff.. i've read that i need to do some "port forwarding" but i dont really know how and i also tried to enable the PPPoE but that didnt work either -i tried to go to the http://192.168.15.1/ site but it didn't work.. it just says "done" and then i get a 404 error.

also when i was doing the **** thing to get my the phone adapter's IP address it said 0.0.0.0 --that doesn't sound right..i tried to change it so that i can have a static IP address but i got "invalid value"

i've also rebooted the phone adapter like a billion times sometimes i get a dial tone and when i make a call i get nothing.. and other times i dont even have a dial tone... --i am currently without a dial tone and ready to strangle this thing

i'm willing to do anything to make this thing work.. PLEASE HELP

thanks in advance

I'm confused also. Most likely your router and modem are two seperate devices.

Do you mean that you have your computer connected to the modem via USB and your PAP2 connected using the ethernet port on your modem?

If so, it likely means that your cable company won't issue you two public IP addresses. They may have initially, but then took it back later.

If that's the case you will have to purchase a router that will connect to the modem via ethernet, and then the PAP2 into the router.

my computer is connected to the router via usb so that my pap2 can be connected to my router via ethernet

NHTracker.. there is no other way i can fix the problem? i just spent a few bucks on all this .. now i have to buy a new router (with 2 ethernet connections) too?

You might be able to make the PAP2 work by connecting it to your computer, but the ideal situation would be to get the RT31P2, which has a builtin router.

What type of router do you have? Sounds more like you are connecting your machine to a USB modem.

Like others have said it sounds as if you this was yoru prior connection

Cable-->Cable modem-->Ethernet to your PC

and now you tried

Cable--> Cable modem < USB to PC : Ethernet to Pap2

You will need to purchase a router do this

Cable-->Cable modem-->Ethernet to Wan on Router--> 1 of the ports to PC another port to PAP2

Getting the Vonage RT31P2 would be much better than buying a separate router. However, it might not be easy to exchange one for the other. Typically, the PAP2 is sold in retail stores, and the RT31P2 is for people who signed up over the phone. I'd try calling customer service to see if there's any way to switch.

The reason we're all confused is due to the fact that there aren't any USB routers. At least any that I know of. I think what your calling a router is in actuality your cable modem. A router is a completely seperate device that connects into your cable modem.

Is this what you have? http://www.arrisi.com/product_catalog/listers/index.asp?id=320

If so, this is merely your cable modem, not a router. You will have to purchase a seperate router to connect your computer and PAP2 to the modem. Otherwise you can call your cable company and request an additional public IP if you wish to use your cable modem with the set-up you appear to have. Your cable company may charge you an additional monthly fee for use of two public IP addresses, which is why it may be more worth your while to just buy a router.

so i guess since every1 has been saying i need a new router i guess that's what i'll do.. i just thought there was another way to fix the problem.

the weird thing is that when i connect my pap2 to my cable modem and connect my cable modem to my comp via usb... my pap2 works.. i can use the phone all i want.. but i on my comp i dont really get a clear internet connection. "local area connection 4" so i cant really surf the net but i can talk on the phone =/

i duno.. ill figure this out.. thanks for all of ur input =)
