All - I am sure this question has been asked before, and I've read through the various posts, but I'm just not seeming to figure this out. New to vontage, and i want to be able to use my exisitng phone jacks for my vonage service.
1. Outside box. I've read many of the posts that state I should disconnect the phone jacks in the outside box (legal demarc point), but when I go to it - there arenot jacks, but just a series of screws with wires attached to them. I've removed each wire from the screw in the hope that this would provide the same results, but it has not helped. Here's a link with the pic o what I am talking about..

2. Box downstairs :I have a box in my basement with a series of phone jacks - again I've disconnected all, but still no dial tone on my the jacks:

Can someone PLEASE provide some insight on what I may be doing wrong?
New house - built in 2000, if that matters
thanks

I am assuming that you have Vonage only. No POTS service.
OK, leave your outside box alone. You have a structured wiring setup so you can handle everything inside. This offers better protection against accidental reconnection.
In the inside box, find the line coming in from outside and unplug it. Put tape over the jack where it was plugged in and attach a tag to the cable warning the uninformed not to plug it back in.
Plug all of the inside wiring cables back in (they appear to be unplugged).
Plug your adapter into the wall and everything should work like you expect. |

Thanks very much for the reply. I tried what I think you were recommending and still no luck. The piece I assume you meant was basically the main phone wire coming into the inside box ("line 1 in") - so I removed that and plugged everything back in (some pictures below), but still no luck.
ANy other suggestions? I've unplugged my Linksys after each attempt, but is there something else I should be doing (such as rebooting the compueter?)
thanks

Go through it methodically.
I assume you have Vonage working with a phone plugged into the adapter.
Plug the adapter into the wall and then take your phone to the box. Plug the wire coming from the adapter into your box and plug the phone into your box. See if you get a dialtone.
If that works, add one other jack in the house (i.e. plug another cable in), take the phone there and try it.
If it doesn't work, try plugging the line the adapter in into the port where line 1 was plugged in.
Is there a model number on the panel with the jacks? Can you get a picture of it which allows me to read the writing next to the jacks?
Were there any patch cables installed previously? |
