PostPosted: Sat Jun 04, 2005 8:07 pm    Post subject: Linksys RT31P2-VD & Optimum Online Does it Work? Reply with quote Back to top

I just bought the Vonage service and it came with the Linksys router RT31P2-VD with 2 phone ports on the back. I hooked everything up and my internet service is fine, but the phone service doesn't work. The 800 number at Vonage wasn't much help. Is anyone familiar with Optimum online and what could be causing my phone signal not to work. Vonage said they are not receiving a signal from the router.
I need to have a home phone!!! Please Help!!!

I turned off my computer, Unplugged my old Linksys router. I then plugged in the ethernet port from my cable modem, all three computer lines, the phone line into the phone 1 jack, and then the power cord. I then plugged in my router, turned my cable modem back on, and then finally turned the computer back on. All three computers work fine but the phone does not work. I don't get a light on the router.

well I know at least a couple people who use optimum online so I don't think that's your problem.
what is under Status, Line at http://192.168.15.1 ?
do the phone lights blink occasionally? how about the power light?

The phone lights do blink every once and a while and the power light is steady. The space under the status tab says voice version 2.0.13
Everything else on the page is empty.

looks like it's never been able to connect to Vonage at all. you have the rt31p2 going directly to the cable modem right? looks like either they have the wrong mac address for you, or...I dunno. try this just for fun from a command prompt:
tftp tftp.vonage.net get test

Is the cable modem connected to the WAN port on the RT31P2?

If the computers can access the Internet, but the voice doesn't work, then it probably means either hardware failure, or the box is not properly registered with Vonage.

Also, you are using the 12V power adapter that came with the device, right?

I am using the power supply from the previous Linksys router. Would that be a problem?

It's a problem if the other one isn't a 12V supply...

Somebody else tried the same thing a while ago:

My other router was a linksys also, so I had assumed that the power supply would be the same as the new Vonage one. It plugged right in and I had power...but it wasn't the same. As soon as I used the supplied power supply cord that came with the Vonage router, everything started working.

I can not thank you enough!!!!! That was it. As soon as you asked about the power I remembered I never switched it. I figured the two routers would use the same power supply. NOT!!!!!!!!!! The other one was only 5volts. Everything is now working great!!!!!!!
Thank you VERY MUCH!!!!!!
