OK. Just installed my brand new Motorola unit on my home lan. The setup consist of the following: Cable modem -> Motorola -.> Netgear MR814 wireless router. The configuration works great and voice quality is excellent. Now the problem. I tried connecting to my company's VPN. No good. Finally found out that the problem is that both devices are doing NAT. This is bad when it comes to IPSEC. The only way around this problem is to connect the motorola to the Netgear unit. However this negates the QoS capability of the motorola . This setup may not be a problem if you don't do large uploads or you have good upload speed.
There is another solution which involves getting IP addresses from your ISP. But this solution can be costly and not for the faint of heart
Oh well if only the motorola supported RIP. My problem would solved! |

I have the same problem but it appears that the problem is more due to an apparent lack of IPSEC passthrough support by the Motorola unit
Is this true?
My recollection is that the CISCO unit supports IPSEC Passthrough ......... can anyone confirm? |

Yes.. You're correct about the lack of IPSEC passthru support on the vt1000. I don't know about the ATA 186 |

I've just signed up, and received a VT1005 motorola unit. although i don't use ipsec, the manual for this unit says it supports
"the following Application Layer Gateways (ALGs): IPSec NAT tunneling (for VPN pass-through) PPTP NAT tunneling (for VPN pass-through), and FTP "
hope that helps |

That's if you could access those features. The unit Vonage provides allows for basic administration only. IPSEC passthru is not a configurable option. |

I've been working with Vonage Tech Support that last few days. I've been assigned a single rep who has been very responsive and has called everyday to follow up.
Long story short: Firmware 1.16 on MTA VT1000 stabilizes the loss of service as long as it is behind the MTA. They've acknowledged that VPN connections do not work and should have a solution in about a week.
Till then I'll have to change my configs when I VPN or use my Vonage service. |

Please let us know when you are notified on a fix for this (the tech's name would be nice as well). I am having the same problem.
I had to configure my Motorola ATA for passthru mode and have RoadRunner assign me a second DHCP address (for an extra $9.95 per month).
Right now, I have Cable Modem->Mot ATA->DLink Router.
With NAT/DHCP disabled on the Motorola ATA (aka passthru), the Mot ATA and the DLink each get it's own IP from RoadRunner. My VPN is working fine this way, and the Mot ATA is doing a great job at providing QOS for my phone calls. I can start a large file transfer while on the phone with no loss of voice quality. |

Okay. Now I'm confused.
I've using the Moto VT1000v with VT20_01.1.16 code on it, in NAT/DHCP mode in front of my Microsoft router (MN-700). IPsec and PPTP VPN's both work great. I'd have screamed if this didn't work.
I didn't have to make any settings changes. |

Move the mot to the otherside of the router... unless you do large uploads or have very limited bandwidth you will not know the difference (or than being able to do VPN). |
