Please read this post carefully..I'm not asking to use Vonage through a dial-up to connect for the phone service.
Here's my question. I already have Vonage installed using broadband. However, I need to connect to a local dial-up ISP on occassion but don't have a regular phone line now that I use Vonage. Therefore, is it possible to plug my phone line directly into the Vonage phone adapter to my PC and use it to connect through a 56k modem to a dial-up ISP as if I had a regular phone line through the telco?
Why not use my highspeed connection instead? Long story..don't ask why. |

I thing if you want to get a serious response to your question, you have to tell us why. Perhaps there are alternatives to dialing up to your ISP when you already have broadband - alternatives that someone could suggest.
There are a lot of web-based alternatives to accessing an ISP.
For example, for e-mail, you can download from www.mail2web.com at any computer without having to "connect" to an ISP using an e-mail program.
Frankly, given the propensity of e-mail worms and viruses, I stopped using programs like OUTLOOK a long time ago and switched to web-based mail. It's a lot easier, and I don't have to configure "POP servers" and such, and I can use any computer, anywhere.
Or are you trying to access some sort of database or what?

It would help to know why you need to do this.
Some hints: Dial *99, before the number. I guess this is popular with people trying to send faxes, which is a similar type of communication.
Additionally, try reducing the speed your modem is trying to connect at. The Vonage line may not be good enough to handle 56k. Some modems can automatically ratchet down to a lower compression setting due to line noise. This may or may not work with your Vonage line. I don't expect Vonage can support modem connections of faster than 14.4k, and that may be giving them too much credit.
The big problem with using a modem over Vonage will be issues with latency.
I have tried this in the past, only halfheartedly. I just tried dialing with *99, at a normal 56k speed. It did not work. But then, as with fax calls (see the appropriate part of this forum) this type of communication depends heavily on having a PERFECT connection. |
