Recently I lost internet connection to my computer but my Vonage still worked. I called my cable company (Charter Communications) and they told me to completly disconnect the Vonage phone adapter (RT31P2) and reconnect the cable straight from the wall outlet to the cable modem to the computer. I did this and I had internet access to my computer. I then re hooked up the RT31P2 and I had phone service but no internet to my computer. Charter told me that I have a fried phone adapter. Could this be the case?

Keep in mind that I have had NO problems from the first day I received the RT31P2 from Vonage and that was about 3 months ago.

Any ideas?

It is possible that the router is fried, it is also possible that it is misconfigured to not run NAT and DHCP and Charter stopped giving you two IP addresses.

Can you access the router from the PC?

I've had similar problems, though rare, with my cable company. The fix is very simple:

Power down all network devices (except computers). Power down the cable modem, any router you may have, and your phone adapter. Wait about 30 seconds. Power on the modem, wait until it is fully up and running. Next, power on your router (if you have one). Wait until that is up and running. Next, power on your phone adapter. WAIT until it is up and running (wait for the POWER light to stay steady and wait for the LINE 1 light to be steady).

In the past, this has worked for me. It's only happened 2 or 3 times in the past 3 months, it's just a bit annoying.

I have had this as an ongoing issue for the past few months and three incarnations of the RT31P2. The phone always works but the internet connection for the computer fails and cannot be regained using Win/XP network repair.

What I've discovered is:
1. The IP address assigned to my computer is always where xxx is random, and the DHCP server is which is the broadcast address for getting a DHCP address. I did a IPBLOCK search on the Ip address with SamSpade and I was referred to IANA REC 3330 which seems to have this block reserved for "local link" when the DHCP server is down.

2. I cannot get into the RT31P2 at

3. I cannot access the cable modem at

4. Rebooting the RT31P2(press the button on the back of the unit) always brings back my computer internet connection without resetting the Network connection with XP, all access to the modem and router is regained, and the phone keeps working. After checking, there are no recorded failures showing in the Cable modem log.

5. In my attempts to correct this with Linksys, they don't have a clue on why this occurs.

Some conclusions
1. If the internet modem connection was really gone to my ISP the phone would not work.

2. If the cable modem was out I should still be able to get into the RT31p2

3. Since rebooting (by pressing the button on the back of the unit) the RT31P2 always brings everything back, I feel it's a problem in the RT31P2.

Does anyone have any understanding of what's really going on here or a suggestion for tracking down the problem?

It's a long shot but could this be my 10/100 card?

I would really like to put an end to this condition.

Thank you

PS this is why I do not use MAC cloning with the RT31P2. I let the Cable modem learn the RT31p2 address so when it reboots everything works.
