I've tried to look but haven't seen a good solution to this. I'm sure that the internet light didn't blink before unless there was internet activity. The light on my RT31 has been blinking for the last 20 hours or so. What is the condition of anyone else's?

Seems to me that I don't remember it happening until I had to disconnect everythging to fix a problem. The Linksys site's copy of the instruction booklet indicated that it only blinks if there is activity. The light on mine is blinking with computers turned off. What kind of activity can be going on? I'm worried about takeover of computers for attacks on websites. Can't think of the proper term for that.

Put a piece of tape over the light, and you'll never need to worry about DDOS's again.
Mine does it too, all my devices do it when connected directly to the modem. It's not a blink.....blink....blink either, it'sblinkityblinkblinkblink constantly, like morbid rats after a piece of moldy cheese (if you can imagine what that actually looks like, I applaud you).

The PAP2 and RT31P2 initiate an outgoing "heartbeat" UDP packet to the Vonage servers about every 8 seconds. I don't have my router in front of me so I cannot give you a more precise time period. This UDP packet essentially says "I am here and this is who I am in case you need to get ahold of me". This establishes a connection with the Vonage servers. It is this connection that allows most of us to never have to bother with opening Vonage related ports on our local routers. Our router lets the UDP packet out and if Vonage needs to send us a phone call then they are actually responding to our last packet out which our router is typically happy to let in.

Of course your mileage can vary. Your router/firewall may be setup by default to not let certain kinds of packets in the front door no matter what. In these cases you do need to take action to open your router/firewall up a bit.
