PostPosted: Wed May 25, 2005 6:52 pm    Post subject: Connecting 2 RT31P2 routers Reply with quote Back to top

Hello,

II've searched the forums and found several configuration options, although nothing specifically for connecting 2 RT31P2s.

I would like to connect both routers so that I can have up to 4 lines.

I configured the first router as follows:

DHCP enabled
LAN IP: 192.168.15.1
Address range: 192.168.15.[100-150]

First router connect to the internet and works fine with Voip

Second router:
Connected to router 1 through a LAN port, wAN port is not connected. I used the supplied cable, and I don't know if that's a non-crossover or not, but I CAN connect to the router.

DHCP disabled
STATIC IP: 192.168.15.200 (outside dynamic range of 1st router)
Gateway (router 1's IP: 192.168.15.1)

I can connect to router 2, but I get no dial tone or phone lights. I don't know if the "internet" light is even supposed to be lit since I'm not connecting through the WAN port.

Any help appreciated
Thanks
JB

On your second RT31P2, connect the WAN port into the first one's LAN port. Try this configuration:

Connection Type: Static IP
IP Address: 192.168.15.2 (Or anything outside the DHCP range)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.15.1 (address of the first RT31P2)
DNS 1: 192.168.15.1

Local IP Address: 192.168.16.1 (outside the 192.168.15.* subnet)

Administration->Remote Administration: Enabled (this will let you get to the config page by going to 192.168.15.2)

See if it works at this point... It's possible that you might have to forward some ports on your first RT31P2, but I'm not sure yet.

Well I may have solved it, although I have no idea how kosher this setup is. I connected the second router via a LAN port on the first router to the WAN of the second.

#2 is in the DMZ of #1
#2 is getting its WAN address dynamically.
#2 DHCP is off and there are no hosts connectred to it (nor does there need to be for my purposes).

I can't connect to #2 locally anymore because I'm not going into a LAN port, but the Voip seems to work. /shrug

That sounds like the dynamic-IP version of what I suggested. If you enable the Remote Administration, you'll be able to see the config page from your lan. However, as long as the second router is in the DMZ, remote administration might be visible from the Internet, so that might not be such a great idea.

Thanks, Paul.

Your setup doesn't seem to work with #2 on the x.x.16.x subnet for some reason. If I leave it on the .15 subnet outside the DHCP range it seems to work ok, however. No remote administration, but as you said, it's not too safe. All I really need to do is swap to the LAN port if I need access anyway.

Thanks again for your help,

JB

The .16.1 was for the Local IP address, not the WAN IP address... I was just saying, the LAN and WAN sides should be on different subnets, even if you're not plugging anything into the LAN ports.
