Hello all,

I have a motorolla surfboard sb5100 cable modem with RoadRunner service. I have a phone plugged into the phone port 1of the Vonage router and I can surf the web just fine with both computers I have plugged into the RJ45 ports. The problem is that I don't get a dialtone from the phone at all. The ethernet lights are lit as expected along with the power light, and the internet light blinks fast. However, the phone lights on the front of the Vonage router both blink once every 60 seconds or so...but nothing else happens. I've been through all the standard support stuff reseting the router and modem and cloning the mac address and stuff. Still no luck.

Long story short, I'm now on my second Vonage router that they have sent me with no resolution.

Any help would really be appreciated.

Thanks,

--Jon S.

if you haven't done this specific reset, you can give it a try:
unplug power, unplug phone cords, push and hold reset button, plug power back in while holding reset button, keep holding reset button for 15 seconds after powering back on. keep an eye on the power light, and don't plug the phones back in (or power the box off) until it stops blinking.

what firmware version do you have at http://192.168.15.1 ?
also, under Status at that site, you can refresh quickly while the device is trying to register (when the phone lights blink) and sometimes get the error message or see where it's failing. keep looking next to Registration Status.

Hey,

Thanks for the quick reply.

I tried the reset that you suggested as described and am still experiencing the same issue. I also wasn't able to catch any error messages refreshing the status page...but I'll keep trying that.

I'm running Firmware Version: 1.27.01, Jan 17 2005.

interesting, did the power light blink at all when you reset it?
you have a slightly older firmware version which would probably be updated once it connected to Vonage, which makes me wonder if it's not connecting for some reason. one reason would be because that mac address isn't registered in the Vonage system (i.e. they entered the wrong one or still have the old one instead of the new one)
just to confirm, roadrunner -> sb5100 -> rt31p2 -> computers, right? anything else in there? and for the heck of it, if you have another router, try connecting it to the modem and the rt31p2 to the other router, just to see if that will work at all. I have no idea why it would, but I've seen it work for one person.

Thanks again for the help, your suggestion of plugging in my second router to work in tandem with the Vonage one inadvertantly fixed the problem!

My other router was a linksys also, so I had assumed that the power supply would be the same as the new Vonage one. It plugged right in and I had power...but it wasn't the same. As soon as I used the supplied power supply cord that came with the Vonage router, everything started working.

Lesson learned...not all linksys routers are the same...even if they are the same size, color, and seem to power on the same. Eek

Thanks again!

jsender,

let me get this straight. You have a functioning phone line once you inserted a router inbetween your cable modem and the rt31p2 but did not have a functioning one prior to it?

So from what I can tell, you were running the RT31P2 with a 5V supply, and it powered the router, but not the phone lines.

That might mean that the "router part" uses an internal 5V voltage regulator, but the "phone part" requires the full 12V. That would imply that there are really two mostly-independent circuits running side-by-side inside the RT31P2, and only one of yours was working properly. How interesting...

the phone and router parts are seperate. one can function without the other. my friends box was hit by lightning and it fried the phone board but not the router.

The old router you had - was that originally connected to the cable modem before you got the 31P2? If so the problem might be that the modem is looking for the MAC address of the old router since that was the "last" working device attached to it.

Try this. Unplug your modem for 5 minutes. Unplug all your routers. Plug in your modem and wait for all the lights to become active. Plug in your 31P2 and connect it to the modem.

I've got a SB5100 and when testing new routers, I have to power down so the modem "loses" the MAC address of the previous device. It's easier than constantly typing in a spoofed MAC address in the router (which you should also be able to do with the 31P2 if you wanted).

My apologies for misreading the post. It is very interesting that this problem is appearing more frequently in posts lately (i.e. router works but phone line does not appear). I'm glad to hear jsenger that you got your phone line working.
