I need your help.
I have been a very happy Vonage customer for over a year now, using my Motorola phone adapter and Time Warner RoadRunner Wisconsin as the ISP.
I now moved to Colorado (yeah!) and switched to Comcast as the ISP. When I now connect my same Motorola phone adapter (that worked fine 5 days ago with Time Warner) into the Comcast cable modem the green LED on the phone adapter blinks two time repeatedly (over 10 minutes and no change). I followed the instructions from the Vonage website (preferred setup) to the "t". I switched all components off & on in the prescribed order but still I cannot go beyond the two blinks (indicating it is trying to obtain an IP address).
I am using the exact same setup as I used before: cable modem --> Vonage phone adapter --> Linksys BEFSR41 router --> two computers running XP. I know I had to log into my router and give it the "physical address" to make the computers be able to access the internet. Is there something like this I need to do with my Vonage phone adapter ......... I thought I should be able to plug it into any modem (network jack) and it should work ......... why cannot it not obtain an IP address?
Any help would be appreciated!!! |

make sure it's set to dhcp or obtain ip automatically in its setup. also, comcast is notorious for making users register the mac address of their devices, so make sure comcast has the mac address of the mta if they require that. |

I checked with Comcast and they told me I did not have to register the MAC address of the MTA with them. On the other hand I had to tell my router what the MAC address (the physical address you get from "ipconfig / all") is though ........ is there something I need to do with the MTA?
Thanks! |

ipconfig /all lists info from your computers network cards. why you would need to enter that info in the linksys I have no idea, unless you have mac address filtering, but I thought that was a wireless security feature. everything looks good in the web based setup of the mta right? and I assume the mta is the first thing you ever plugged into the cable modem (which one do you have?) but if it wasn't, power it down for a few along with the mta, then power the modem back on, wait, then the mta back on. see if that won't do it. mundy5 posted some info about one modem screwing with mac addresses or something, so if the mta wasn't the first thing plugged into the cable modem, that could be the problem. I'm looking for that post now...ok here it is http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic5828.html I've never actually read it, but have a general idea of what it talks about. hopefully it'll help you too. |

OK, let's try to walk before we can run ....... I have disconnected everything. Now I just have my cable modem connected to the WAN port on the Motorola phone adapter ........ turned everything off for several minutes. Then turn on the modem ...... wait a minute or two ...... then turn on the phone adapter ....... it makes it to 2 blinks and then just sits there .........
Why is this not working? Same hardware worked last week ..... only difference is Comcast vs. Time Warner .........

What's the brand/model of your old and new cable modems? Did you keep the same modem? Are you able to use the Internet if you plug a computer directly into the modem? |

Comcast has their own Voip service -- Comcast Digital Voice. They aren't playing "dirty", are they? |

I think it's too early for conspiracy theories. It sounds like a configuration problem, and lots of people use Vonage with Comcast. |

If you gave them the MAC address from your ipconfig, then you gave them the IP of your ethernet card. Most models of modems have their serial number and MAC address on a sticker somewhere on the device. You need to register that address with Comcast. |
