Ok just moved in a new house, ordered Vonage, I have a cat5 wire I can hook up between the Vonage adapter (which will be in the basement) and the outside where all the Cat3 (all phones jacks in the house) is, I had the electrician do this. How do I link them; with a junction box on the outside? How do I ground the box? There is a grounding rod for cable right where the cable comes outside the house.

There's no need to connect the outside phone line to the Vonage device. You simply connect your Vonage device to your home network and then plug a phone into the Vonage device. That's it.

If you don't have DSL or Cable, then you have a problem since Vonage doesn't really work without high speed internet.

I am trying to get Vonage to every phone jack in my house, I have all the lines run, but no NID or junction box on the outside. I am wondering if I can just use an outdoor junction box, and if a ground would be necessary. Thanks!

The ouside wires are my phoen jacks not the telco's

This is how it will work

Router->Vonage adapter-> Cat5 (with RJ11) to outside-> Junction box to all cat3 phone wires.

Do I need to ground the box?

truckin88,

I can try to answer your question. As far as I can tell, having looked at the NIC outside my home, the telephone circuit is not grounded. I have disconnected my home from the Telco's NIC and plugged the rt31p2 into one of my jacks. If you examine your jacks, you will notice that there is no grounding wire. Everything is run of a pair of wires.

In your case, it appears that a star configuration would be appropriate since each room has its own separate cat3. Then all you would need is a junction box into which you connect all your jacks (use the primary green-red pair) into the outputs of the box and then connect your cat5 into the input connection and all your jacks should go live.

The only question I have is why do you want to set it up outside your home when you should just set it up in your basement? Are all your cat3s outside the home? Would it be possible to pull them all into the basement and connect there? That way you wouldn't have any weather issues. Just a thought.

The Cat 3 runs from all the phone jacks, individually (Star or home run pattern) to the outside, originally planned for the Telco, but the electrican very smartly put in a Cat5 between the basement (where the home network router is) and the outside where all the Cat3 ends. so I have to have it outside, the reason I asked about the ground is because in most junction boxes that is what is there, I plan on using this junction:

Yes, you can ground that to the same ground for your cable system. It probably isn't necessary as the ground is intended to supply protection in case of a lightning strike to outside cable or phones lines, but it won't hurt.

If you are concerned about your equipment then you would actually want to ground the phone line right before it goes into the equipment instead of or in addition to at the junction box.

Also since this box is outside you might want to add a warning label that it is connected to Voip equipment and should not be hooked to a regular phone line. It is probably wouldn't ever be an issue, but you never know.

EDIT: PS. You know the picture of the junction box on that web site is upside down, right! If it were installed like that it would fill with water.

Connect your CAT5 in telco fashion (blue pair to red/green and orange pair to black/yellow) into a jack.
Terminate the other end of the CAT5 into your junction box following the conventions you used in the basement.
You can ground the box, but there will be very little in that box that is conductive. Connecting any of the CAT5 wires to ground will wreck your curcuit.
Finally, plug a cable from your TA into the jack. That should put dial tone on all lines in the house.
There is also a way to get line 2 into the jack. Respond here if you want to do that.
