PostPosted: Tue May 24, 2005 12:00 pm    Post subject: RT31P2 DOA? Internet- good; phone- nothing Reply with quote Back to top

First, for a little background information. I am a former 3com tech support rep and I was a network technician for 4 years in the military, so I concider myself at least somewhat competent when it comes to PC's and networking subjects. Also I have trolled the previous posts in the forum for near 2 hours now. I've found similar problems, but nothing I've read from a previous post has helped.

Setup:
InsightBroadBand(cable) > DCM425(cablemodem) > RT31P2 > (Ethernet1 to PC Nic) & (Phone1 to Panasonic KX-TG2431 cordless)

Internet works fine. That is set up fine. I'm writing this with the RT31P2 hooked up. Phone lights blink together a few times 20 or so seconds apart when the RT31P2 is reset. Never get a dial tone.

I called last night to the 'vonagehelp' call center in what sounded like India. I talked with the automated responce human though troubleshooting this thing resetting it and cloning MAC and this and that and their final conclusion was the RT31P2 is broke, call service dept. I was skeptical of that last night, though I am less skeptical after reading the forum for a while.

I have tried shutting everything down and booting the cable modem> then the RT31P2 > then the PC
I have tried reseting the TR31P2 with the Phone line disconnected, and then plugging it in after the TR31P2 starts up.
I've tried MAC address cloning again. (this only seems to help if you are switching to a new RT31P2, not when you have a new install from what I've read).

I know there are some very knowledgable people out there, and I will appreciate all advice greatly. I also have a few questions as this is my first foray into Voip. I like to understand the things I use.

I read that the RT31P2 is supposed to generate a dial tone for the phone even if there is no connection. Is this true in practice? And since I've not heard a dial tone at all, is it a dead givaway that the thing is DOA? Does the RT31P2 'Phone home(vonage) and authenticate the phone services somehow, and what specifies Who's device it is and who's minutes they are when it's being used? Is that done by MAC address? When I hit the 'clone' button in the MAC cloning tab, it enters the MAC of my PC nic card. Won't this cause a problem if it Authenticates with Vonage by MAC address? If I'm supposed to clone the MAC address of the cable modem, how do I get that as I don't see anything in the Manual for my cable modem about an interface for getting such information.

Sincerely,
Trying to be Vonage Evangalized
Robert Camp
PS Sorry about the long winded post. I wanted to head off the basic questions and get to the problem without going back and forth. Thanks again.

I just bought this house, and never got POTS set up. I pulled the phone out of the box (new) and hooked it up to the RT31P2. Forgot to mention that.

Is there a dail tone if you plug a phone in the jack? Not the RT unit. If there is you will need to disconnect the RJ jack on the POTS interface.

Erm. Perhaps I'm not understanding you. This house hasn't had POTS (as in Plain old telephone service) running in probably 2 years. We never set it up with the phone company when we moved in. But for the sake of trying, I plugged the phone we have into the wall jack . No dial tone. What's an RJ Jack?

RJ45 that connects POTS to your phyiscal location on the outside interface. I only asked because if the previous owners transferred their # the then the line could still be live. I've had it happen to me.

Hmm. I see. Well, the RJ12 for the phone is going from the phone to the RT31P2. As far as I knew that made the entire setupindependent of the POTS.

Not quite sure what taylor's talking about. Sounds like he thinks your trying to make the whole house live with Vonage. That's not what I'm getting from it though.
If you can surf, you have a connection, it's as simple as that.
Even with no phone plugged into line 1 (or 2 for that matter), you should get a solid green light after 20 seconds or so.
Just to rule it out, do you have a plain old corded telephone you can try, just for giggles?
I've read here before that Vonage accidently activated Port2 instead of Port1. Try that. Or, have them activate your number on Port2.
Have you verified with Vonage that they have the correct MAC for you?
Just some ideas......

I don't have a plain corded telephone, to be honest. I might be able to get one for tonight. But for now, I'm operating under the assumption that the phone works. When I hit 'talk' it says line 1 in use. The MAC in the RT31P2 interface for the Router status lists the same MAC address as what is on my Account information sheet that I got in the Mail from Vonage. So I'm thinking yes.

If it's true that the phone light should light up even without a phone plugged in, then I'm more sure then ever that the thing is broke.

Tracerbullet:

I had a similar experience

Is your cable modem recycled?

I had such hassles with the techies at Vonage because the ones whom I spoke to, could not get past the Lynksys router. Despite my telling them the problem, they ALL insisted that I do repeated attempts of ipconfig *** hoping something different would happen.

Follow this thread, and see what Mundy5 told me to do.
http://www.vonage-forum.com/sutra33080.html#33080

If your cable modem fails to "see" the RT, you ain't gonna get nothing.

Adapt the instructions for your situation.

This should be a FAQ. Mod said that he is setting one up
