PostPosted: Sun May 22, 2005 11:26 am    Post subject: Configuring Linksys RT31P2 to Static IP broadband Reply with quote Back to top

I just set up a new home office and switched my broadband (Time Warner) from residential (with dynamic IPs) over to business class with one static IP address. They gave me a different cable modem and my Linksys Vonage router doesn't seem to like it or I am missing some kind of configuration. I was previously connected to Vonage with this same router.

I know enough about basic networking to go into TCP/IP settings on my computer and assign the static IP address and DNS, gateways etc. but now I'm not sure where to go to get the router and Vonage line active again, can someone point me in the right direction? I've read help files and searched this forum but I can't find much on configuring the router to a static IP address. Last night I thought I had it working, but whenever I would plug the vonage/linksys router into one of the ethernet ports on the cable modem, it would bump off the internet connection and now today it's the reverse, the cable modem and internet are fine, but neither of my phone line lights (I have Vonage fax line too) are lit up or working. The net connection says it's enabled in my network settings and the ethernet signal light is on and occasionally blinking as if transmitting data.

Any tips where to go next? I swear I had a dial tone yesterday and phone lines lit up and now it's not. I have power cycled everything to reset and again, my static IP and internet are active as I'm using it now to access this site.

Thanks for any help and advice.

access the router at http://192.168.15.1
the first drop down box has static ip. don't assign static ip values to your computers. keep them at "obtain automatically" if the computers run through the linksys.

ok here's an update.

I can't access the router's IP (192.168.15.1) through the cable modem, any ideas why? I also get a Windows System Error "there is an IP address conflict with another system on the network" whenever I switch my PC connection from the Linksys router back to the cable modem directly.

I find that if I connect my PC NIC to the Linksys Router, I get two active Vonage lights and the phone works, but internet does not. If I switch the PC back to the cable modem, I get internet connectivity (after I get that IP conflict error) and then the Vonage lines are dead as well as any pc's going to the Linksys Vonage Router.

There's just one missing piece I'm not doing right in setup here, and now I'm confused! Again, I can't access the router's IP to configure...

Thanks for the help, I will keep trying!

I don't know what all you're doing, but this should be very simple and straight forward. if the pc's go through the rt31p2, keep them at obtain everything autmatically. do not assign static anything to them. once they are set back to obtain ip, dns, etc etc automatically, connect them to the rt31p2. they should now be able to access http://192.168.15.1. you can even have the modem unplugged, it doesn't matter. just as long as one pc is set to obtain automatic and it's plugged into a lan port of the rt31p2 with a standard ethernet cable. if this simple setup still doesn't work (as far as accessing the rt31p2 internal page) then power down the rt31p2, and disconnect the cable modem from it. then power back on while holding the reset button down for 15 seconds. then try accessing again with the computer. if that still doesn't work, there's a mistake being made somewhere in the line.

Hey thanks for sticking with me on it, I was over-complicating it by making it static IP from the very start, which I was doing in the LAN network settings on the PC I was trying to connect to the router. I backed that off and told it to find the IP automatically like you said, reset my connection and the router and then I could connect to the router settings page to specify the DNS addresses. Now I have two pc's running behind the router and the Vonage connection is working too, thanks for the help!
