I'm in the same situration. I have the PAP2 Vonage adapter. My cable internet is 4 meg down and 512 up (I think). DirecTivo is connected through home wiring to the PAP2. THe DirecTivo dials, but it "Failed to connect" every time. My DirecTivo is the Heughs SDVR40. I've tried about every prefix I can find. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I recommend just going with the serial cable option. You can get the cable through 9thtee.com. It's easy to set up and only takes a minute to for updates.

I'll only use that as a last resort since the device is nowhere near a PC and I don't own a laptop. |

If i'm understanding it correctly you connect to you laptop via this null serial cable and then it gets its updates from the web....... direct tv said they have no where on the internet to get the up dates...... please go into depth on where it gets its updates from. |

Not sure how in-depth I can go on it, but also check out the Tivo Community (google it) and they have a lot of information. Yes, you use this serial cable which is hooked up to your laptop or other computer. Then you go throught the DTV Tivo interface to force it to make a daily call where it will download your updates for you. Works very nicely and doesn't take long at all to set up or actually get the updates.

You can buy the cable for about $10 plus shipping. But if you have to have it now, you can make it yourself. I got everything I needed at Radio Shack for under $8.
I found a color diagram of what pin out to use from from a DB9 female connector on the web. If I can find a link, I'll post it. |

You can get the cable from 9thtee.com Go to the following URL and look about halfway down. You can find step by step directions by doing some searches in these forums and also on Tivo Community. The instructions are for Windows XP, but I had no problems with W2K.
