PostPosted: Sat May 21, 2005 2:11 pm    Post subject: Linksys RT31P2 Power Supply Woes in 220/240 V Land.. Reply with quote Back to top

Hello,
I purchased two Vonage phones, one for use in India. I'm having issues with getting the device powered up. When used with a 220->110 step down transfomer, rated upto 1600W, the lights flash for a second and go off. I researched the transformer some more, and found that it was rated 50-1600 W, which was out of the range of the 23 W required by the OEM Power supply. So, then, it was tried with a 12V 1000ma generic power supply.. and no response, no flashing lights, nothing. I tried it with a transformer rated upto 20W, and the power light came on for a good 5 seconds and went off.
I'm not currently in India, and I'm trying to assist the person who is going to use that device with not much luck.
Anyone know a reliable place I can get a power supply for this device in India? Also, given the sequence of actions, have I already fried this modem?

Thanks!

when your friend used the adaptor, did they check to see the polarity? cuz some units have a positive centre electrode, and others use a negative centre electrode.. if you have the wrong one it won't work.. also, check to see what the amperage ratings on the rt31p2 is, and get one similar to that.. there has to be a store with an adaptor that is as close as possible to what you need.. have them take the ATA to an electronics store and explain whats up, they can prolly try different things in the store and buy the one that works..

Thanks for the reply dabones..
Yes, I did have her take it to an electronics store..
She plugged it in with a local 12V 1000ma power supply (which is the spec of the OEM power supply, and there was no response, no lights)
And the rest, I described in my previous post. Agonizing..
Maybe I'll tell her to try a different store.. but the lights come on breifly.. I'm hoping that means its not fried, and its just a matter of finding the right adapter

I wanted to ask a couple of related questions if I may.

Just today I was trying to set up my Vonage box in Eastern Europe on 220v. With a universal 220 to 110V adapter, 50Hz, 23.5W, I get the power, ethernet and internet lights on the RT31P2 router to come on for a minute or two, then they go out. These lights come on, though there is NOTHING at all plugged into the adapter other than the power. I fear that the unit is history.

My question at this time is simply this ---- since I am getting lights to come on, does that indicate that the RT31P2 adapter is still alive and potentially useable? I

Well, I decided not to dilly-dally to see what I could figure out. I'm banking on the unit being toast and I've got a replacement on the way.

It's a pain, but oh well... the thing that's frustrating is that there is obviously a huge benefit to using Vonage internationally and having a US number, and they give you a 110v power supply so you've got to run the thing off a transformer! Crazy! I can't believe that anything comes with 100-120v only power adapter anymore!

Take care! Best of luck.

Bart,
Where were you using it? and how'd you order the replacement?
Also, did you try a generic 12V DC 1000ma power supply?

You read my mind Smile
I emailed Vonage customer care yesterday.. waiting for a response.. I've had the modem tried with several 12V 1000ma power supples.. but the lights wont stay on.. Sad
I think my girlfriend plugged it into a transformer rated 50W to 1600W the first time.. which is over the 23W spec of the Power Supply.. I wonder if this could have fried it? Anyone know?

Hi:

I have the PAP2 for my Vonage service. It has a wide range power supply (both 110 & 220).
