I have some questions about how Vonage works with Roadrunner. Both Vonage and Roadrunner customer service told me that you can have Vonage if Roadrunner provides the ISP, and you don't have to pay a fee to Roadrunner for the priviledge, but noone has been able to explain to me how that could be true, and my housemates flat out don't believe it.

I have found a thread where people said they have both Vonage and Roadrunner but they did not discuss a single detail about it; moreover, that thread is very old.

Who here has both Roadrunner and Vonage? Did you have to set it up with Roadrunner as well? Did you have to pay a fee?

Also, was there a problem with Roadrunner blocking Vonage's ports, or with having to call Roadrunner to specifically get them to open the correct ports? If anyone had to do that, what kind of hard time did they specifically get from Roadrunner?

Yours,
Dora

Roadrunner

I am assuming you mean Time Warner.

That is correct. RR/TW is an ISP, Vonage is a telecommunications service which "rides" on the broadband that you pay RR/TW for - two totally different services.

Hundreds, if not thousands of our members have RR/TW as their ISP provider. My mother and father do also.

Although this forum has several detailed reports of certain ISP's reportedly blocking SIP ports (the ports that Vonage uses) I have never heard of RR/TW doing this, in fact, most members with RR/TW never have ISP related issues.

Sign up - enjoy.

Just as Dan explains, Vonage VOIP service is just another protocol, just like HTTP, that "rides" on your existing broadband connection.
I also have Time Warner RoadRunner service and it has worked flawlessly.

Thanks!

Now, please understand, I have paranoid housemates. It is not possible to enjoy anything before they are satisfied.

I need to specifically check. To y'all's knowledge, has anyone had to tell Roadrunner they were getting VoIP, ask Roadrunner to open a port, or pay Roadrunner a fee in order to get Vonage?

I think I can see what the answers to that is - but you haven't specifically said.

Thanks!

Dora

got vonage this march, installed it and a couple of minutes later i was up and running. didn't tell roadrunner didn't have to do anything with roadrunner. have heard from a few people that roadrunner is very user friendly with regards to mac addresses. some ISP's have to re-enable your service if you change your mac address. road runner doesn't if you change it.
i've changed out etherenet cards and installed the vonage router and roadrunner just accecpts it.
it's purely plug and play. tell your friends to loosen up and get with the program(Vonage).
it's all transparent to roadrunner, you don't need to call or pay roadrunner anything.

I switched from Time-Warner digital phone service to Vonage last year for the cost savings. TW had provided excellent phone service and customer service but being retired a few bucks is a few bucks. I just called and canceled my digital phone service with TW. I did experience one problem. I wanted to keep the telephone number TW had provided me. I requested a transfer but after a month or so I found out the original number was 'owned' by MCI worldcom and not TW ? That caused a BIG problem so I just opted to keep my temp instead. That turned out to be a problem as the exchange I was given '325' was a Durham,NC not a Raleigh,NC exchange where I live. So anyone calling me from Raleigh will be charged a toll. So be it. Maybe they will get frustrated over Ma Bell nickle and diming them to death and jump on the VOIP bandwagon.

I didn't have to tell Time Warner/RoadRunner a thing. T/W/RoadRunner didn't need to open any additional or special ports, and there is no additional fees from T/W-RoadRunner

Now let's see what more the housemates can think of to worry about!

Wish me luck!

Same story here. I use Road Runner in Portland, ME. I received my start-up kit from Vonage and followed the installation instructions and was functional within minutes. I have had no communications with Time Warner regarding this service. To my knowledge, they don't even know I use Vonage. I have had no service issues whatsoever.
