PostPosted: Thu May 19, 2005 12:04 pm    Post subject: What about number portability ?? Reply with quote Back to top

My phone number is in 418-847-xxxx and the 418 area code (Quebec City) is available at Vonage.

BUT, i can't transfert my current phone number to Vonage yet. There is a few people that i know in Quebec City (418-522, and some more) that CAN port to Vonage.

How does this stuff works ? How come my NNX isn't portable ??

Can someone explain that for me ?

Thanks,

Vince

I really depends on whether or not the CLEc's Vonage uses to route calls over the internet have a number in your exchange or that they cover the exchange you are looking for.

are the exchanges actual Quebec City numbers? or are they from a different city/town on teh outskirts of Quebec City?

the city the exchange is registered to has to be the same as the city that Vonage gets its exchanges from..

just cuz you can call it locally, doesn't mean it's in the same city/region.. around London has that problem too, there are cities (say Dorchester) that have a different exchange that are like 2 mins away from a real London exhange, and they wouldn't be able to port either..

Actually, the Quebec City area is splitted in a couple of NNX numbers. But 418-847 is for the nothern part of the city. But it is in Quebec City and not another city like 5 minutes away from Quebec City.

Sure it's not downtown.. the 418-522 i had as an example is downtown.. maybe that's why it can be transfered ? But what i don't understand is that another nnx, located the same distance from downtown, but on east side of Quebec City, can be transfered. 418-667...

Anyways, looks like i'll still have to wait... maybe Videotron will have Voip number portability before Vonage in my area.

Actually, it is not the city that is important here, it is the rate centre that your number belongs to that is important. As Vonage doesn't have numbers in your rate centre, your number can't be ported. Your number is in the "Loretteville" rate centre. Vonage's number provider doesn't have any Loretteville numbers. They only have Quebec (city) numbers in the 418 area code.

418-522 is in the Quebec (city) rate centre by the way which is why your friend can port and you can't.

Good Luck.

That explains a lot !!!

And, i tested 418-667, which is the Beauport area, but the rate center is Quebec. That's why they can port their number.

There is any indication about Vonage expanding their number portability ? Will, someday, my rate center be included in the portability ? Should i wait or think about changing my phone number ?

I would look at changing my number if I were you. Vonage is still in growth mode in Canada and there are still some major centres that don't have local numbers available. I suspect that they will roll out local numbers in other centres first before going out to the suburbs.

Easy for me to say, I know. I was lucky enough to have a Vancouver rate centre number even though I live in Burnaby (the city next door) so porting was available to me and I took avantage of it. Most Burnaby residents have Vancouver rate centre numbers but a significant number have New Westminster rate centre numbers so some of my fellow Burnabyites can't port either. There is no Burnaby rate centre despite having a population of over 200,000. Also, most Greater Vancouver area residents don't have Vancouver rate centre numbers. There are three times as many people living outside Vancouver proper than within (no forced amalgamation here) so most people here can't port their number to Vonage either. Of course, amalgamation wouldn't solve change how the rate centres are divided as is the case in Quebec City, Montreal, and Toronto.

Thats what I meant Smile

cities that keep growing often 'take over' smaller outskirts area's and no-body reallly notices.. there are many places around London that have a London address, but have a different phone exchange and they can't call half the ppl that london can call...

my buddy's cousin has a London address, abut has a Belmont phone number, he can only call a few numbers locally, but someone at the other end of the road that happens to have a London number, can call over 30-40 Miles radius.. thats whats nice about cell phones and of course Vonage, cuz the numbers come from the major city so you can recieve incomming from more ppl.. I live 30 miles from London and have a london cell and london Vonage, just cuz I'm local to almost everywhere.. (including the city I live in of course)..

We used to have that problem in Greater Vancouver as well until the late 90s. Then the Greater Vancouver Regional District and Telus petitioned the CRTC to make all Greater Vancouver (from Lions Bay to Langley) a toll free calling area between the different rate centres within the regional district as it required a rate adjustment. Therefore all the rate centres within Greater Vancouver have the same local calling area, but the separate rate centres still exist of course. Prior to that, it used to be long distance to call from say, parts of Coquitlam to parts Surrey, which is just across the bridge, depending on what rate centre you were in Coquitlam (Port Moody, New Westminster, or Port Coquitlam) and what rate centre you were calling to in Surrey (Whalley, Newton, Cloverdale, White Rock, Bridgeview, Fort Langley, or Langley). It was nuts! Thank goodness for Vonage where none of this matters, except for number porting!
