I have a mobile phone with an 860 number on Verizon and I am interested in switching to Vonage. I have questions and dug through the forums but I can't find answers anywhere. If I port the number to Vonage, what happens when people dial my old 860 number during the porting process? Do they get my old 860 voice mail or the new Vonage voice mail? Can I still use the 860 cell phone during the porting process? Can I already use the Vonage call forwarding during porting? I understand that I should not cancel the old service and that I will get a new temporary Vonage number, but I want to make sure people calling my 860 number don't just get a "number disconnected" message or something. -Hans |

Your old# stays active until it is ported. Vonage will give you a virtual(temporary) # to use with their service until that happens. |

To add to that, your old number and your old line stays active. Keep the phones plugged into your Verizon line until the port goes through. That's what I did, anyway. Side-by-side phones on the desk (one Verizon, one Vonage.) I'd only use the Vonage phone for out-going long-distance calls.
My Verizon (Mass.) port took 2 months, by the way. March 22 to May 17. |

Even if you keep your old line during the LNP transfer, the number can get stuck in limbo for a few days where neither Vonage not your old provider have access to it. This happened to me and it was very frustrating. I think the cause of the problem is a 3rd party phone company that holds all of Vonage's phone numbers. Your number is not really transferred to Vonage but to this telco. Sometimes Vonage and their telco get confused and your number can get lost. |
