PostPosted: Wed May 18, 2005 10:18 am    Post subject: RT31p2 - not getting IP through rogers Reply with quote Back to top

Hello all

hope you can help me - I having a nightmare.

I've just got the RT31p2 and connecting through rogers in canada (it's a UK service I have though).

I've connected up the router with the rogers ethernet cable into the internet port on the back of the router.

I've not made any changes to the router itself (ie. set to Obtain Ip Address automatically)

When I connect my pc with another net cable into the the back of the router, I get a local IP address from the router eg. 192.168.15.25, but I can't get through the network.

I've switched off all firewalls etc., but it's doesn't like it - I thought it should work straight out of the box ie get an ipaddress and let me on the net?

I've not even tried the phone bit yet, as I can't get on the net with it.

Any ideas?

My next task after getting just that bit sorted is that I have a netgear wireless router that I want to connect into the RT31p2 router and then use that to connect (rather than a cable connection directly into the back of the RT31p2 router from the PCs) - any ideas what I need to do there, eg. do I set the IP address of the netgear router to be on the same ip range as the router, eg. 192.168.15.10 or do I need to set the netgear router to obtain an ip address too? Is there any other settings I need to get it working on the netgear router?

it's a bit complicated setup, but I really want Voip with Vonage, and to use the wireless router to get wireless connectivity on my laptops.

Thanks for any help..

This is actually not that complicated of a setup and is pretty much what I have. Firstly, to address why you cannot get access to the internet via a LAN workstation, that could be a number of things. Your ISP may restict what MAC address is allowed on the network and the RT31P2 (P2) does have MAC address cloning. So you may want to pull off the MAC address that your Netgear has, which also may have used MAC address cloning from your initial cable modem PC setup. Also, you may want to double check the IP address, DNS Servers, and Default Gateway are the same in the P2 as they were in the Netgear routers. I am not sure what O/S you are using, but if it is Windows XP or 2k, you may want to open a cmd window and type "IPCONFIG /RENEW" to make sure that windows is configured properly on your new LAN with the P2. If you are running Linux you may need to do a "IFDOWN eth#" followed by "IFUP eth#" (where # = the ethernet interface in question - most likely 0).

What I would suggest doing is putting your Netgear router back online and get it to work as you had before the Vonage router. Then get the following information:
IP Address, DNS Servers, Default Gateway, and MAC address.

Then put your Vonage router in between the cable modem and the Netgear router and verify that the above information matches in the Vonage Router. Put the cable modem cat 5 cable into the WAN port of the Vonage router. Then put a cat 5 cable from a LAN port of the Vonage router into the WAN port of the Netgear router. You are essentially running two different subnets (one for the Vonage router, which would be something like 192.168.15 and the other for the Netgear router something like 192.168.0). You need to make sure that these are different. Then try and get into each of the routers 192.168.15.1 and 192.168.0.1. Set the Vonage router to obtain IP addressing information automatically as you had before. This should then inherit the settings that previously were in the Netgear Router. The trick now is to go into "Applications and Gaming" and enable "DMZ" with an address of 192.168.15.2. Also, in "Port Range Fowarding" set "Application" to "ALL", "Start to "0", "End" to "65535", "Protocol" to "Both" and "IP Address" to .2. Then go into your Netgear router and set to obtain IP address statically with an IP address of 192.168.15.2 (which is the DMZ of the Vonage Router), Subnet mask to 255.255.255.0, and both the ISP Gateway and the Primary DNS to 192.168.15.1 (which is the Vonage Router).

I have done a bunch of installs like this and they work great and also allow QoS and VPN. This may help with some understanding but one aspect is actually WRONG - "VPN connections, as well as the ability to host applications and services (which require Port Forwarding) behind RT31P2 (2), will not work due to the double NAT arrangement." - it will and does work:

I may try and post some more detailed instructions with JPG images to help with understanding of this approach.

Turn all your devices off. Turn on you modem and let sit for a minute. Then turn on your RT31p2. I've found that when you connect a new router or any new device directly to a DSL or Cable modem, a reboot of the modem is needed since it is trying to communicate to the MAC of the device that was connected to it.

Just my 2 cents.

I have Rogers too, Rogers, does not like you to change equipment, they lock the modem to the IP of the last device, (router, PC, PlayStation, etc).. if you are changing your setup, you need to release the IP.. if it was last connected to a computer, you need to go to winipcfg and 'release All' then shutdown, then you can plug your router in and go.. not sure how to release it if it's connected to your netgear..

try and do that, also reset the rt31p2 for 30 secs..

and after you relaese, unplug your modem as you connect all devices, then turn on modem, till lights stop blining, then turn on rt31p2 and when phone lights stop blinking, turn on yoru computer..

wow, I'm too high to type w/o misteakes.. lol

Well I'm getting there!!!

I did a cmd dos and did ipconfig /release, so that cleared all the ips.

I switched off everything unplugged all power on both rogers cable modem and the P2 and the ethernet from the pc to the p2. then I plugged in the ethernet cable from rogers into p2. Then I switched on rogers modem, waiting until online lights appeared stable. Then plugged in the power of the P2 and waited. It flashed for a bit and then the internet light came on so I delicately (whilst standing on 1 foot and crossing alternate fingers on my toes and hands) plugged in the ethernet into the pc.

Didn't think it had worked but after a refresh of google in ie it popped up - superb!

Well at least I'm that far - thanks very much for the pointers; feel a bit daft that I didn't just take my time and do things in steps like the above - will try to remember that.

Thanks very much to everyone, keep high!

J.

Good deal.. did you get the phone part to work yet?

Rogers likes to lock IP's, my bor foudn that out a few years back, when he and a friend unplugged their computer and plugged in a PS2, they managed to get the PS2 to work, but then they plugged the computer back in and it wouldn't get IP, the modem was locked to the PS2.. lol, and no way to release it, they had to call Rogers, and they got all pissy (like always with them) and they said it would reset after 24hours.. this was of course, all before they had a router..

well I got everything else I needed working EXCEPT the phone!, got the netgear plugged into the P2 and so I can now sit in the garden in the sun (finally!).

But the phones not having it yet! I just plugged in a normal phone, and expected a dial-tone, but nothing, not even a "I'm broken" tone.

I tried going to the P2 setup (192.168.15.1) and clicked on voice, but keep getting "Router is synchronizing services. Please wait a moment.", well I've been waiting for about 15 minutes now and nothing! I get a similar thing on the "status" tab, ie. "Router is synchronizing services. Please wait a moment.", again nothing after waiting a few minutes.

Any ideas on that would be really appreciated - I'm dying to try this Voip thing!!!

Enjoy the weekend, if the rest of Canada parties like they did round here last night then it's going to be a very unproductive week next week and they'll be telling the stories well into June!
