Please help

1. With the following topology cablevision-----cablemodem----Motorola-----PIX 501----PC I have to reboot the Motorola almost every day as it loses dialtone. There are no speed or packet loss issues that I can see.

2. If I put the Motorola behind the PIX 501 (in a DMZ type config) and open IP both ways on the firewall (i.e. everything is open on the firewall) the Motorola never serves dialtone. With debugs I never see any TFTP on port 69, which I would expect as the Motorola has to talk to some sort of Vonage Server.

Does anyone have any ideas on either of the above ?

The first one is a killer. I miss calls daily cos the service is down. I have seen other topics saying do not have the Motorola between the Cable Modem and the PIX as the Motorola cannot handle the load. Is this correct ?

Would I be better off with a Cisco ATA device ?

Anyone have any tech docs on how Vonage works ?

Vonage technical support is poor so far.

thanks in advance

Very Happy

I gave up on the Motorola ATA outside of my firewall as it loses dialtone daily. It is either being port scanned too much from outside or it cannot handle the internal traffic from the firewall passing thru it.

So I put it inside the Cisco PIX firewall to minimize both problems. Spent hours debugging and it would not work. Finally I opened a browser session to the ATA / 192.168.102.1 (using a straight thru cable from my PC direct to the ATA) and changed it's IP Address to a manual address and rebooted the ATA. Lo and behold it now works. No other changes to the PIX were needed.

A friend said he had identical issue inside a PIX i.e. you have to statically address the ATA or it will not work. I am a CCIE and it makes no sense to me (it was previously getting a DHCP address fine and was pingable). I even had all ports open both ways on the PIX to test it and it still would NOT work. BOTTOM LINE _ SET IP ADDRESS MANUALLY IF YOU HAVE A MOTOROLA ATA INSIDE A PIX FIREWALL

Hope that Vonage read this and put it on their site. They had no idea how to solve it.

I now have to wait and see if I lose dialtone inside the PIX. If I do it will be in the garbage by tomorrow.

cheers

I have the same physical configuration, but my caller ID doesn't seem to be working. I always get "Unknown Name, Unknown Number". Any ideas?

Thanks much.

My company uses CISCO PIX firewall too and we had the same problem in that the Motorola device would not get a IP address via DHCP. Our solution was the same, by assigning a static IP address to the Motorol unit.

I wonder if this is a known issue by Vonage?

I had similar problems with a Linksys BEFW11S4 wireless gateway plugged into the VT1000's PC port. It turned out to be an ethernet autosense problem. If I put an ethernet switch between the VT1000 PC port and the Linksys - works WONDERFULLY.

Before all this, I had Vonage upgrade firmware on the VT1000 to 1.16d which cured some PPTP and Cisco VPN Client IPSec pass-through problems I had.

So, now I have reliable voice and data service, QOS and I can run my PPTP, SSH, HTTP, SMTP servers inside of the Linksys.

Oh, the VT1000 has NAT/DHCP turned off which puts it into bridge mode. This means that both the VT1000 and the Linksys get an IP address from RoadRunner, which RoadRunner allows. Your ISP may vary.
