DHCP = Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol.

You can configure DHCP to pass a specific IP address to a device based on it's MAC (Media Access Code or Hardware Address in Windows nomenclature)

For example, my machine is the main spam filter using Popfile. I make sure that every time I boot my machine always gets the same IP address by specifying it's MAC in the DHCP configuration.

Google is your friend btw.

KD1S,

It's not necessary to set your MAC address in the DHCP server. That is unless you have a lot of machines using DHCP. A device using DHCP, will always try to get the same address that it had when it boots up.

When the device get's an address, the server keeps track of it's MAC address and the IP that is assigned to it. When the device is rebooted, the information in the DHCP database will still be there, and it will get the same address.

If you were to turn off the device for longer than the lease time, then you may not get the same address.

Either way works. I'm not trying to tell you to do it differently, just wanted to add some info.

For more than you probably wanted to know:

Finkster - yes I'm aware that the DHCP server tracks the MAC address but I've seen instances where the lease time was so short that you had to map IP to MAC else a server could lose its address.

Too many techs seem to be blinded to the potential conflict with the cable modem, and rga rt.

Simply put, if you get a new RT, then the cable modem will not recognize the new decice. When it does not communicate, then you have no service.

Something similar happened to me.

I got the solution from mundy5

Try this: http://www.vonage-forum.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=32522#32522

First off, most printers don't come with an IP address assigned to it. All of the HP's and Canon's that I've dealt with in the past 6 years all are set to DHCP. The address your printer is grabbing should be coming from your Linksys.

If, for some reason, the printer manufacturer shipped a printer with a statically set IP, your best bet is not to reconfigure you LAN around the printer. The printer should have some sort of reset on it. There may also be software like HP used to have in Jet Direct. This found printers on your LAN even if you were not on the same IP range (you needed the IPX/SPX protoco lnstalled to see the printer though). You could then modify or assign IP addresses.

What brand of printer are you using cause this situation is far from what is considered normal.
