PostPosted: Sun May 15, 2005 8:21 am    Post subject: 1st Post! Outage/virus? Phone network status page? Reply with quote Back to top

Hello Vonagers,

I'm a newbie. Just signed up for Comcast broadband about 2 wks ago, and got Vonage 3 days ago. It came up fine. (Using temporary ph # pending transfer of existing.)

Sometime yesterday the phone went down. The router phone light is off. The router config for status on phone just says:

"Router still restarting. Please wait a moment."

I did the usual reset, still no-go. (Maybe I need to leave power off longer than a few seconds?) I noticed on boot this morning that I could not open a browser (Firefox or Explorer) initially, then I could. I think I saw some new stuff in Task Manager (XP Pro) but did not take note of it, and now it's gone.

Do I have a phone virus, or is the service down? Does Vonage have a status page showing current known problems with the network etc? (I don't see one and BTW can't find one for Comcast either.)

Anything I can try on this end?

John

Vonage posts service announcements on the dashboard.

Log in to your Vonage account and look near the top of the right hand menu, currently mine says no announcments.

That information is also replicated here for registered members, look in the left hand column for "Vonage Service Status". It also says no announcements.

Thanks for the tip.

Is this announcment feature actually used much? Is the info in it detailed and timely enough to be useful?

John

A while ago there were two outages in the space of a week. Both were reported. There was also a call routing issue that occurred recently, it was also reported.

It's tough to answer your questions because outages don't happen regularly. As far as the information being useful, I think that it is sufficient enough to let you know that the problem isn't with your equipment or connection so that you don't have to call customer service.

Looks like a bad phone adapter/router. I was on the phone (old line still working until phone number is transferred) with tech support for probably close to an hour. They had me do the usual power cycling a couple of times, which I had already done, and a hard reset. Then we tried a soft reset, which returned "save failed".

Between Mohammed's accent and the poor phone connection, I probably understood about 15% of what he said. Based on e-mails they sent me, they are billing me over $100 to send another unit, and I hopefully will be credited after I return the original one (they also sent and e-mail with an RA# and return instructions).

Do these LinkSys units go bad a lot? They seem to run hot and I'm thinking of rigging up a 24-hr fan when I get the new one.

At least it's likely that I was not doing just being stupid!

John

depends on what you mean by a lot. Vonage has over 600K subscribers, with probably the majority or close to it with the rt31p2 (my guess, could be way off). I doubt they have 200-300,000 users asking for a new one. but they do die as we've seen a lot in this forum (lopsided obviously since people who have working service probably wouldn't seek this site out).
