Internet 4000/385, Motorola Surfboard 4100, Dlink 604, PAP 2, 4 Telephones utilizing brand new CAT-3 wiring.

Most of the problems I have been experiencing have been on 5 out of 10 calls. What happens is the other party hears my voice as garbled or robotic at times. This occurs on both incoming and outgoing calls. Calling the other party back usually clears things up. I also have periodic phantom DTMF tone issues as well which occur on one call but not the next. I can always hear the other party just fine. I duplicated many of the afforementioned problems by having someone call my cell phone from the Vonage phone while I was in a different room. It usually took a few consecutive calls in the span of 5 to 10 minutes to get the one with the bad connection.

When I recently called Vonage to address these issues, their answer to the problem was to migrate me to port 2 which didn't resolve anything.

I have run pingplotter, DSLR packet loss tests, Vonage Forum speed test, and testyourvoip.com regularly. All of these tests come back at or near perfect. That's why I'm pretty sure that it's not my internet connection. I also reset my PAP2 periodically to ensure that it is working properly.

I'm just curious if any of these issues could be caused by my D-link router? The router usually works flawlessly with my computer and is running the most current firmware from D-link. The PAP2 has been assigned a static IP and is in the DMZ. UPNP is enabled.

Any ideas? The wife, who has been the victim to most of these problems, is now afraid to use the phone. She has been using her cell phone for most of her calls and has mentioned wanting to go back to Verizon.

the garbled it could be slight network congestion since you don't have any type of qos on your network, or it could be an isp issue. it's good that your tests are showing a good connection, but think of the amount of packets and the nature of the internet...nowhere near perfect.
at any rate, I'm not saying deal with it, but I am saying I have no idea what to tell you, heh, with the exception of say a linksys wrt54g or similar router if you want to give qos a shot. could always return it if it doesn't help.

Well, the Vonage Voip test test is the same from mycooltools.com
and shows that I should be able to have 12 high quality lines, but I have a hard enough time having one good line, and yesterday the router decided to not work for 2 hours....Spent 1+ hour on the phone with customer service, told to unplug etc all the usual things, get transfered to a CS Rep, who puts me on hold, where I hear the wait time is anotehr 5-10 mins...
Good lord....I thought this was a great way to save money etc but this is the second router I have had from them, and am starting to think it is time to get back to a regular landline... Sad

I have recently had the same problems with the garbled voice and robotic type sound. Yo are right, calling back seems to fix the problem. The service seems to be getting worse instead of better. Can someone from Vonage comment please?

Exactly! For me it is worse because I have it for both the house and my work...So sometimes I am trying to conduct interviews on the phone and have to repeat myself over and over...and my clients are dropped...It saves alot of money but is becoming very frustrating...and I have been a client for a year.

Here are some suggestions that may improve things if you have not already tried:

1. Upgrade firmware on DLink 604.
2. Drop your Vonage bandwidth down from 90kbps to 50kbps. (This is how I operate and the difference in quality is hardly noticeable).
3. Check for anything on your local network that may be periodically hogging some upload bandwidth - spyware on your PC, etc.

As reebok mentioned you may very well need to introduce QoS into your local network. The DLink 604 does not provide this capability (that I am aware of). Your options are to replace it with a router that does have this or switch over to a RT31P2/Vonage router and put it up front.

These suggestions all presume that the source of the problem is local. As was also mentioned by reebok the problem could be further upstream, i.e. the ISP or beyond. #2 above may help alleviate the problem somewhat if that is the case.

DLink 604 - this is the router that the original poster is using. I was primarly responding to him/her. Post more details about your network configuration and hopefully someone here can help out.

Trowski,

I jumped over and looked at your other thread and then took a look at your testyourvoip.com results. You have oodles of bandwidth both ways but you are also jamming a lot over stuff over it. What is the QoS setting in your RT31P2? As reebok said your packet discards from you to Boston is completely consistent with what you are reporting related to call quality. I am dead-on 4.4 score both ways. I have a more modest cable connection but have a solid QoS implementation in my router.
