I received an email yesterday inviting me to participate in beta testing of 2 new routers. These routers are WRTP54G and RTP300.
Does anyone have any specs on these new routers?
I currently use a WRT54GP2 and would be interested in finding out what the differences are between it and the new WRTP54G. However, I do not want to risk outages on my phone service in order to beta test these new routers. |

Is there somewhere that you can get on a list if you are interested in these types of Betas?

Found this on Cnet... Vonage, a provider of Internet-based calling services, is testing wireless routers, a sign the company is on the verge of debuting a mobile offering.
The ongoing customer trials involve a new Linksys Wi-Fi router that Vonage could market along with its calling plans, according to an e-mail sent to customers and seen by CNET News.com. Vonage has in the past acknowledged that its customers are also testing a handset equipped with a Wi-Fi antenna and radio.
With the special router and handset, individual customers would be free to roam about their home or office, untethered from a modem or phone jack and without a connection to a laptop or desktop computer. Vonage could also market the routers to hot spot providers such as Boingo Wireless for installation in airports, coffeehouses and other such locations where wireless hubs have slowly begun to appear. |

I just picked up a WRTP54G from Circuit City. I had been using the PAP2 device connected to a WRT54G router, however, I was having issues with my DirecTV/Tivo units which couldn't dial out. Since I could not get a firmware update for the PAP2, I decided to get a newer version of the Vonage firmware by purchasing the combined router/phone adapter device.
Test so far revealed that this device has corrected my DirectTV/Tivo problems but the built-in Phone Adapter has dropped the phones offline more than once requiring me to re-boot the router, which also brings down my LAN at the house while reboot takes place. I guess that's the one disadvantage of having everything built into one device.
Tests also reveal that many of the router's help screens don't come up. Just get error accessing many help pages. Finally, the new WRTP54G does not have any way to update the firmware as of yet. I'm hoping Linksys will come out with an auto-updater for this box's firmware and updates to both the Router and Phone Adapter's firmware before too long.
One other thing to note before you move to this box. Linksys recently came out with a firmware patch for the WRT54G which includes some "fixes for Voip" issues. I'm guessing that, had I installed that version of the firmware on my old router, it may have fixed my DirecTV/Tivo issues and saved me $129.00 I spent on the new router. I'm going to give this new device a couple of weeks of testing. If it continues to act up, I may very well go back to that older device if my phones keep dying on this new device. |

couple questions. why are you posting in this thread? did you look in the manual where it says Vonage updates the firmware automatically and linksys is not involved in it? did you search the forums here where there are multipage threads on the latest pap2 firmware versions? are you sure you looked at the device closely? it should be wrt54gp2 not wrtp54g. I'm not necessarily trying to be hypercritical, but information on your issues are everywhere. I'm not familiar with directv/tivo etc (there is a whole other forum dedicated to that) but a wrt54g with pap2 is a great setup if you configure it correctly (namely qos) |

I bought the WRTP54G (that's the model number on the unit AND manual) at Best Buy two days ago and it absolutely blows. It keeps choking up with pings shooting into the 400-500ms range until I unplug it and plug it back in. Most changes don't take until I unplug it and plug it back in with some features not working at all (i.e. port forwarding).
When I contacted Linksys tech support, the guy just kept asking me, "Are you sure you typed in the right product number?"
It is an absolute piece of junk! Do not buy it until they release a stable version of the firmware! Hell, I'd be happy if it even showed up on LInksys' site. |
