I spent a few hours today working with Vonage getting my Firmware updated from version 1.00.18 to 1.00.25. The update failed several times. Eventually a tech with Vonage 2nd level was able to configure their server to allow my router to download the update. Apparently, the server (or my router) would time out when sending (or receiving) the 3.8 meg upgrade. Vonage was able to make some changes and now I have version 1.00.25. It is supposed to correct an issue with the wireless connection dropping and reconnecting every few minutes.

I just picked up a WRTP54G from Circuit City. I had been using the PAP2 device connected to a WRT54G router, however, I was having issues with my DirecTV/Tivo units which couldn't dial out. Since I could not get a firmware update for the PAP2, I decided to get a newer version of the Vonage firmware by purchasing the combined router/phone adapter device.

Test so far revealed that this device has corrected my DirectTV/Tivo problems but the built-in Phone Adapter has dropped the phones offline more than once requiring me to re-boot the router, which also brings down my LAN at the house while reboot takes place. I guess that's the one disadvantage of having everything built into one device.

Tests also reveal that many of the router's help screens don't come up. Just get error accessing many help pages. Finally, the new WRTP54G does not have any way to update the firmware as of yet. I'm hoping Linksys will come out with an auto-updater for this box's firmware and updates to both the Router and Phone Adapter's firmware before too long.

One other thing to note before you move to this box. Linksys recently came out with a firmware patch for the WRT54G which includes some "fixes for Voip" issues. I'm guessing that, had I installed that version of the firmware on my old router, it may have fixed my DirecTV/Tivo issues and saved me $129.00 I spent on the new router. I'm going to give this new device a couple of weeks of testing. If it continues to act up, I may very well go back to that older device if my phones keep dying on this new device.

ptymps,
Just wondering how your WRTP54G is working out. I picked one up at Best Buy and recently signed up with Vonage last week. Unfortunately, I haven't had very good luck. Calls drop out continually. Often, I can't send/receive calls, thus I have to reset the device several times over. It's been nothing but a headache. Many of my friends have very dependable service with Vonage so I'm sure that it isn't the problem. I have Comcast cable with a Toshiba cable modem (PCX1100U). My throughput has suffered a LOT since I installed the Linksys. Sometimes I feel like I'm on dialup--and I'm not on the phone. Since I got a $75 and $50 rebate (after forking over 129.99), I'm not out much except for dependable phone service. I've reset, rebooted, etc. to no avail. Cry Any thoughts?

Well, I took everyone's advice and ditched the Toshiba. I picked up a Motorola SB5120 at Best Buy and what a nice difference! Calls are way clearer! No drops, etc. Thanks, again, for all the help... Cool

I too am having many problems with the WRTP54G dropping my phone lines requiring a reboot of the box. I called Vonage CS and the guy tried upgrading the firmware from 1.00.20 to 1.00.29 but he got time-out's during the upgrade. He put in a call ticket (Ticket #2087940) but I've heard nothing in response. Consequently, I'm going back to using my PAP2, because that was much more stable as far as the phones go. I'm then going to play with more settings on my router to see if I can get the PAP2 to work--if you know how I can upgrade firmware on this device (I'm currently on 2.0.13d), I'd love to try upgrading to see if that helps my DTV/Tivo connect issues.

The link to the Vonage KB article you referred me to told me I should disable the wireless features of the WRTP54G? Given I want a wireless network, why would I do that? Do you mean to say that I should hook the WRTP54G to my existing wireless router and disable wireless on the WRTP54G only? Or are you saying I should not run wireless at all?

That simply won't work given I'm addicted to my wireless router.

Since you seem to be answering a lot of posts, can you tell me how/were to get upgraded firmware for PAP2? I worked with a Vonage CS agent named John on Friday of last week and we were unable to get it to take the upgrade using the following link:

Are you by chance the same John?

that's interesting if it is supposed to force the device to upgrade. I could tell you how to download the file but it wouldn't be of any use. updates are supposed to happen automatically. I don't think anyone has figured out a way to do it manually. there's probably some discussion of it here:

Most people here are not Vonage employees-- just the few people who have "Vonage Representative" with 6 stars under their name. Everyone else is just a Vonage customer for the most part, so you won't find us on the customer service line.
