PostPosted: Tue May 10, 2005 9:31 pm    Post subject: direct connection Reply with quote Back to top

I have seen surfing the internet to find a solution so all my phones in the house can work with one adapter. Meaning the direct connection from the adapter taps in the incoming main line from the tel co. Also, i am buidlign a new house, so is there any information that can help me with this. A diagram of the setup i want to achieve?

Thanks
Danny

I was wondering if using the outside pair of wires on an rj11 jack would work. You obviouslky would have to go out to the box and make sure these two wires are not attached to anything first, but I havent heard of anyone using these two wires for the pap2. Anybody tried it?

As you are having a new house built, and I presume that you are planning on getting cable internet:

Have the house wired for telephone jacks as usual but have the internal junction box on the inside of the wall that the TV cable with be poking through. Have the input to the junction box wired with a RJ-11 plug.

Site the cable modem & the router (hopefully a linksys RT31P2 Router/PAP) in the same area. Plug the telephone junction box into the PAP.

Use a 1 to 2 cable splitter box to split the TV cable with 1 of the outputs going to the cable modem (cable modem can only be on a cable that has been split only once), and the other going a splitter that can split the cable signal to how many rooms that you wish to place a TV in.

It would be preferable to pre-wire as many rooms that you believe you will require a network in with RJ-45 jacks (Game Room for your PS2, Xbox, Living/Family Room - TiVo, Study - PC, etc) especially as the RT31P2 doesn't havve wireless capability, If there isn't enough space on your router for the amount of Cat5e wires, don't worry, just buy a network switch & plug them in to that and then connect the switch to the router.

If you want to connect your PAP to an existing telephone wiring, there's nothing to stop you from using a standard modem cable to plug it into 1 of the phone jacks in your home, although another post mentioned getting the telco's wiring disconnected from the telephone networking box outside your home to protect you from power surges either due to the weather or from the telco pulsing the line for whatever reason.

To address your current house question. For you to enable all your house jacks for Vonage, all you need to do is locate you NIC(Network Interface Connection) box which is generally located outside neat your cable box. Open the NIC and unplug the one RJ-11 connection and the plug in your phone adapter and you should at this point be able to get connected by any phone jack. Be sure to put tape around your RJ-11 jack so no one plugs it back end.

I have 3 splitters b/t the incomming and my modem.. 2 of which belong to the cable company and one I bought myself, but it of the same quality, you need to use a good splitter, not a cheapo one, I forget what teh db rating on it shoudl be, but don't use the cheap 900db ones, they will cause problems, with your Inet and Digital Cable should you have that.. I have 2 digital cable boxes and a modem, all work fine.

as for the home wiring, there are many many posts in this forum about how to set it up, it's easy and it works mint, just make sure there's no previous POTS line connected, this is what causes problems.. Smile
