PostPosted: Tue May 10, 2005 5:11 pm    Post subject: Netgear DG834Gv2 and Vonage Reply with quote Back to top

This is my first post in this forum so I would firstly like to introduce myself.

I am U.K based and have a question as regards the topic in the subject box.

I am a bit confused as to whether the Netgear DG834Gv2 will work with Vonage. I read a post in a Voip forum that suggested that the DG834Gv2 cannot handle SIP and hence will not work with Vonage.

Can someone who is using (tried using) this router with Vonage confirm whether or not they are compatible and that Voip works fine with Vonage (Also any particular firmware version required on the DG834G).

Apparently, Vonage send a Linksys RT31P2 (issued in U.K) any issues with that.

Many thanks for any info that you can provide

Cheers

I am not sure about that Netgear box and SIP - but a simple answer would be no. Vonage does not allow you to use your own equipment, only the equipment that Vonage sends you with their proprietary firmware will work.

Many thanks for your comments dconnor. I am a bit confused by your reply. Perhaps, I did not make myself clear in my initial post.

I appreciate that Vonage will send me an ATA adapter for Voip telephony. In the U.K, Vonage send a Linksys RT31P2. I already have a Netgear DG834G and was merely going to plug the Linksys RT31P2 that Vonage will send me into a spare ethernet port on my router and then connect an analogue phone into the Linksys.

I hope that I have clarified the manner in which I am going to connect my equipment.

I note the following threads which confirm that retaining my DG834G is not an issue.

http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic3641.html

http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic2596.html

If the information contained within these threads is indeed reliable (or not), I wanted to subsequently confirm that the DG834Gv2 does not have any kind of issues with Vonage (ie SIP) and would work satisfactorily.

Many thanks for your help

Cheers

Ok, I did some research. You are good to go. You will need to open up UDP on one port.

That Netgear is a nice piece of equipment..

dconnor, many thanks again for your kind help. Nowadays I always like to ask about compatibility questions before adding any hardware to my system. At least I can proceed now with a very much higher level of confidence.

when you say

Do you happen to know which one....Trying to get this type of info from 1st level support at various service provider can be so tedious at times , apologies for asking this question as you have been most helpful already.

As regards the DG834G hardware, it's fine....Although it is very easy to set up, it can be problematic as regards wireless dropouts. I would not recommend this unit to any novice since flashing the unit's firmware can be unsettling to say the least.

I also note that you moved my thread...Apologies if I posted in the wrong section to begin with

Cheers

I will try to find out which port.
I am working on a big project for this site right now.

Bump this thread in 24 hours if I have not responded.

Most kind. As you say most of the time no firewall ports need be opened. I am trying to set up the DG834G for my mum but my own Voip which I have had for some time equally worked out of the box with no need to open any ports (DG824M).

Nevertheless many thanks for your link that way it will avoid having to call CS which (regardless of provider) is always a pain in the proverbial

Cheers
