Like the subject line states, I was wondering whether it is safe to put my PAP2 into the DMZ on my router.
After all why should I forward ports if I can just put it in the DMZ? It would just be like having the PAP2 in front of the router wouldn't it? |

I just hooked my PAP2 up to my D-Link router and it instantly worked...no DMZ necessary. |

port forwarding is for applications/services/users that need to connect to your computer (server) for some reason. (i.e. a game server) it's not for the Vonage device to be able to connect to vonage/phone service. |

I have had my PAP2 outside of the DMZ and it works that way.
I am thinking that placing it in the DMZ would give it more of a priority over any other device connected to the router.
After putting my PAP2 in the DMZ, I called my landline (still connected until the end of Verizon's billable period), and I am sure that the call came through quicker than when I hadn't forwarded any ports, or placed it in the DMZ. |

I had a hard time with it in my D-Link 624 DMZ. I was getting 2 second periods during calls where I got no voice in/out.
I asked for advice here, and many people said to put the pap before the router. I did it, and my voice quality instantly approved. I know it makes perfect sense that the DMZ would work great, but in my experience it was less than perfect. |

The ATA's are so darn tightly locked down that you shouldn't have to worry about them being "outside" a firewall.
Actually, if they were vulnerable to anything, that could be a good thing because that might finally mean being able to recycle old locked Vonage ata devices.

The Problem is, how do you put a device with only 1 Ethernet port infront of a router?
Even if I was to buy a switch, that would still split the connection 50/50 with no priority given to the PAP2.
As it stands now, the only problem with audio on my telephone service was when I called D-Link technical support today about an unrelated subject, but I suspect that like Vonage rigging their call centers with their service, it was Lingo at fault, as I didn't hear any problems at my end and I wasn't using the internet for anything else either.. |
