What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? What happens with each option if I decide it's not for me? If I do a retail activation can I still take advantage of the first month free promotion?

Which adapter/router is V shipping now? I think my interest lies with the PAP2 unit ($40 at Sam's) unless V is shipping the wireless router.

Retail :

Bring the adapter from the store and activate your phone immediately. You can start using the phone right away.
[EDIT]No Shipping charges, as long as you pickup the adapter from local store [EDIT]

Via Phone:

You activate your phone only when you receive your adapter in mail (after a week). You will be charged from the day you order your adapter. Though you ordered, you have to wait for one week to test the service.
[EDIT] Shipping Charge for Adapter : $9.95[EDIT]

Retail :

If you don't like the service, you can return the adapter to the store.
Basically no shipping or cancellation fees.

Via Phone:

If you don't like the service, you have to return the adapter within 14 days. (But to receive the adapter in the first place it takes 7 days.) So basically you got 7 days to try it out. When you cancel the service you will be charged $39.99. Later once they confirm that they received the adapter they will credit the $39.99 BTW, when you return the adapter you have to pay the shipping fees.

Retail:

You have to wait for xx days to receive any mail-in rebates. One more you have to be 90 days (??) active customer to receive the mail-in rebates.

Via Phone:

No rebates.

Retail:
You can't avoid the one-time Activation fee. ( $29.99 )

There are chances that you won't be charged the one-time activation fee. (it depends on the customer rep)

1 correction- no retail account pays the activation fee.
Another con with phone-in-- typos or mispellings, most reps are careful but make sure, and you also aren't able to read the info as you need, again ask if you need to know anything,same as before

Thanks for your responses, everyone. So it sounds like I won't be charged an activation fee in either case (or maybe that's up for debate?). Assuming that's the case, it sounds like the financial differences are negligible, but would have to wait longer for the retail rebate.

If I signed up online today, any idea which adapter I'd be receiving? I assume it's the RT31P2, but not sure. I think I'd be happier with the PAP2 or the WRT54GP2 (to replace my current wireless router) rather than have two routers. Any opinion on the two-router set up?

I signed up online too.

When I got the adapter, I read al the instructions and tried to use the "setup" discs which asked me which retail location I got it at (ARRRGH!).

Finally, I just bit the bullet, shut everything down, plugged it all in, and then turned on the whole network.

It worked out of the box.

I think one problem with doing it online, is that the instructions are non-existant, vague, or misleading.

I would advise AGAINST using the "install" discs. It should work by just plugging it in (power down EVERYTHING first, though).

Once I decided to stop being an Electrical Engineer and just be dumb old Joe Consumer, it all worked perfectly.

You CAN overthink this!

The people who have "problems" with Vonage in many cases are being overly technical.

oh - when you by it online, it is completely pre-configured for your account and number - that is correct.

The disk is sent for future use should you need to change some settings.

It is plug-n-play out of the box.

Coudl you do me a favor?

Take your last post, print it out on sticker stock and slap it on all the Linksys boxes mailed out. It would save a lot of grief!

I wasted an hour of my life struggling with those install disks. Had I gotten them to work, I probably would have made things WORSE, not better, as they would have re-configured both my routers with new (wrong) IP addresses.

Your post is the first "official" information I have read that confirms my gut reaction that the box is plug and play when you order online.

You know, sometimes it is the simple things...

Toss the install disks! (or save them if you later want to sell the router or something).

I'm not kidding! Vonage needs to provide some INSTRUCTIONS with these boxes.

The instructions that come with them tell you to run the install disks and "configure" the Linksys though a very esoteric process than involved tearing apart your whole network.

Anyone who RTFM and does this will create a world of woe for themselves.

Sorry you think that is funny!

Please tell the powers that be! If something is pre-configured, then label it such.
