PostPosted: Thu Dec 18, 2003 12:37 am    Post subject: Rebooting Motorola VT1000v Reply with quote Back to top

My firmware info is as follows:
Software Version: VT20_1.1.11b
Bootrom Version: VT20_1.1.11b
Hardware Version: Model: VT1000 Revision: 0 BSP: 1.2/0
Config File Version: 3546109

Is there a firmware update?

I have to reboot at least twice a day.

My PC BlackICe got an intruder event from 216.115.25.31 with over 2600 hits.
When I type the IP in IE it seems it is a Vonage Proxy Server.

Anyone else encountering this?

Anything you can tell us would be useful -- basically you cannot plug your computer into the Motorola box -- any modest traffic at all causes it to go under, crash a couple of times day at least.

We use a switch instead, and use the box for nothing other than to make phone calls.

cheers, bc

mine is too but it still crashes about once a day. i've even gone as far as to put mine on a port by itself on my router. It still crashes.

That wouldn't do anything it's connected between my router and cable modem.

That's probably your biggest problem right there. It appears that most people have lock-ups and other problems when putting the MTA outside of the router.

Ignore Vonage and use their "alternate" configuration in which your MTA goes behind your router. Depending on your router, you may need to enable port-forwarding, but try it without first.

You can leave the ATA between your cable modem and your router. Just disable NAT/DHCP on the ATA (put in in pass-trough mode) and let your router manage the Internet traffic. I have not had a single problem with my ATA since I did this. My calls quality is also better with this setup since it provides QoS.

Passthrough mode requires that your ATA and your router both can get a unique ip address from your broadband provider's dhcp server. If the broadband provider limts a user to only a single ip address through dhcp, putting the ATA in front in no-NAT mode will cause the loss of internet connectivity.

I only get one IP address from Comcast and that one got assigned to my router, not to the ATA. Before putting the ATA in pass-through mode the ATA was grabbing the 24.x.x.x address from Comcast. Eventhough Comcast assings the IP addresses using DHCP, the address is static. I always get the same address from them. When I get a chance I will try to check my ATA settings and post them here, but I am sure that I only uncheked the NAT option. I have done this configuration for Comcast and Verizon DSL and in both cases it has worked for us.

Are you assigning a static address to the router, or is the router using dhcp?

I've been trying to figure out how to get passthru mode to work, but can't find documentation on it anywhere.

My ISP assigned me a fixed IP address, but I'm able to grab other IPs through DHCP if I set my router or MTA up to do so. I'm not sure the cable modem will support 2 IPs coming through it (one DHCP and the other fixed) though.

If I uncheck Nat/DHCP in the VT1000, how do I configure the router (which is plugged into the VT1000's LAN port)? Should it have an IP address from the same subnet as the VT1000? Should the VT1000 be the gateway?

I had originally (wrongly it would seem) assumed that disabling NAT/DHCP on the VT1000 meant I could just assign my firewall an IP inside the VT1000's 192.168.102.x subnet, and everything would work.
