I recently subscribed to Vonage, and I'm pleased with the service. Now I'm ready to do away with my local phone company. I want to use my existing home wiring and make all of my phone jacks active. I understand the typical process of locating the phone company's lines and unplugging them at the POTS.
However, it appears that I'm one of the few who has an older wiring setup. I've popped off the cover on the little box on the outside of my garage, and I can see a white wire and blue wire coming from the phone company connected to two terminals. My question is can I simply snip those wires without worry? Should I disconnect them rather than snip them? There are red and green wires that are hooked up to the same two terminals, and those two wires are coming into the house. Do I till need them?
Thanks for any help you can provide.[/img] |

I am stealing this first piece of advice from someone else here, I can't remember who.
Disconnect the blue and white wires and put tape on them. Either write on the tape or hang a tag warning people not to reconnect them.
If you have only one set of red and green wires they may be disconnected, but it is not necessary. If you have multiple red and multiple green wires you will need to leave them connected in order for all the jacks to work.
You could snip any or all of these wires, but you just make it harder for the next guy (or yourself) to reconnect them later. Just make sure that once removed any bare wires don't touch. |
