PostPosted: Sun May 08, 2005 2:55 pm    Post subject: Switch Primary and Virtual numbers? Reply with quote Back to top

I've had a Verizon Wireless cell phone number for years dating back to when I used to live in NJ. All of my friends and professional associates know this number, so since my current employer gave me a new cell phone (and my personal cell contract had finally expired), I figured I'd try Vonage's number portability process and make my cell phone number point to my home. As I now live in PA, I was disappointed that I couldn't port this to Vonage as a Virtual Number considering I'd now have a NJ area code, but I moved forward with the Port anyway. I decided to keep my current local number as a Virtual number so the locals could still call me for 'free' and I wouldn't have to send out yet another notice that I had changed my number due to switching to Vonage.

I realized that I'd be wasting $60/month by not being able to disconnect my personal cell phone as I wait for the Port, but this only began to bother me when I found out that the stated 20 day wait in the porting process is actually for Vonage's 3rd party carrier to transmit the request to Verizon Wireless (which is deceptive if you read the website's porting status page - you'd think it meant that your request was already sent to your current carrier).

Additionally, as soon as Vonage accepts your Port request, your new primary number becomes the one you just started porting. So now my current NJ cell phone number shows up on my caller ID, confusing all the locals into thinking somebody from NJ is calling them, and even those who know my cell number have no way to know to call me back at my house. I'm also forced to ten-digit dialing, even if I'm calling my neighbor, and I'm getting reports of people not being able to reach me on my Virtual (but local) number since Ive been waiting for the Port to complete (Not surprising, since the cell number is now technically active with two carriers). Another thing: you can't forward to a number you are porting either (in my case, home phone to still active cell phone). All this begs the question, why doesn't Vonage wait to change your number until the Port completes??

Can anyone relate to why I wanted to port my cell number to a Virtual number in the first place? You'd think Vonage would accomidate this as part of the "Area Code Selection" they tout as a Feature on their website.

I do have one question - Will Vonage swap my Primary and Virtual numbers once the port completes? If you have been allowed to do so, please advise!

Despite all this, I do like the service (although ACR and multiple e-mail addressees for VM notification are needed enhancements too!).

Regards,
Janx

Just one note-can't make a virtual number into a Primary number. It's one of those no arguments. Sorry. Confused

You can't SWAP a primary and a virtual (well, let's just say they won't do it) but you can easily turn your primary number into a virtual number once the port completes and your ported number is your primary number. All you need to do is a DID change (number change) on your primary number. During the number change process you are asked if you want "permanent call forwarding from your old number." Answer YES to this question and your current primary number becomes a virtual number (at $5/month). Be advised though that once it becomes a virtual number you can't go back the other way and they won't port a virtual number back out to another carrier.
