PostPosted: Sat May 07, 2005 11:43 am    Post subject: Using RT31P2 w/ Existing Cable Model/802.11g Router (WGC200) Reply with quote Back to top

I recently signed up for Vonage and got the Linksys RT31P2 unit. I already had a combination cable modem/wireless router, so I plugged that into one of the LAN ports on the original router. I have Comcast cable modem which is supposed to be 4MB/S, but the tester on this site is telling me I'm getting ~600 kbps down and 370 kbps up, which should support four lines:

Download 607,600 bps
Upload 358,232 bps
QOS 91%
RTT 75 ms
MaxPause 109 ms

Download 643,384 bps
Upload 373,696 bps
QOS 60%
RTT 75 ms
MaxPause 375 ms

So, I'm planning to talk to Comcast about why my service isn't as fast as advertised, but I'm having voice quality issues and I suspect that maybe it is b/c my RT31P2 is plugged into my router/cable modem. I'm guessing that the RT31P2 device does some sort of prioritization between data and voice packets and that maybe I'm losing some of this b/c my WGC200 has wireless connections coming into it that get prioritized higher. Does that make any sense or does anyone else have suggestions?
Thanks
Tim

the speed test here with comcast seems to be flaky. I think it's documented somwhere in these 7 pages. if not it's somewhere else. at any rate, 10:1 says comcast tells you it's fine.

the rt31p2 has qos which can be seen at http://192.168.15.1 (or the ip assigned to it by your router) under the admin and gaming tab. to access it, you need either a computer plugged directly into the rt31p2 all the time, or one time and set up remote administration at the ip above. you can then access it from a computer that's plugged into or wirelessly connected to the modem/router.
there are lots of threads here about qos, but it's really a moot point since you obviously can't put the rt31p2 in front of the cable modem.

Do you think any of the quality issues I'm having on my calls is related to the fact that I can't put the RT31P2 in between my cable modem and wireless? I don't really want to buy different equipment, but does the RT31P2 do any sort of pack prioritization that I'm now missing out on b/c the RT31P2 is plugged into the overall LAN?

it's possible but it could also be the quality of your internet connection (not really related to the speed test)
try testyourvoip.com, boston, detailed results. post them here if you want.
the qos I referred to above is quality of service which the rt31p2 has which can limit the amount of bandwidth our computer uses during a call.
