My questions is at the bottom, but in order to get there I'd like to tell a little story.

I'm new to this whole Vonage deal. I've only had it for two months and have totally loved it...until yesterday.

I got my bill and the .03 cents per minute to Italy that the salesman was peddling ballooned to a whopping .38 cents/minute! Of course, I immediately got on the line with someone from customer service who asked for the number that I was calling. (which, of course, the salesman mentioned above never did when I said, "Now it's really just three cents a minute?") Giving the number to the custservatron illicited the response, "Oh, I think I see what's going on. That's a cellular/premium number and is therefore .38/minute."

What the...?

I went to the Vonage website and looked under international rates and sure enough there were four line items for Italy. The first one was three cents and the others had lists of city codes that were "premium." Now, I can't prove it, but I pretty clearly remember doing the same drill two months ago and seeing just one simple line item. "Italy - .03/minute."

Either way, something stinks here. If there were special codes that were 13x more expensive, the sales hack could have asked for the number that I was calling since I made it very clear that it was the only international call I cared about. On the other hand, if the rate structure has changed, is it so hard to send out an e-mail saying so?

So, my question is, does anyone know whether the rate structures have changed in the past two months?

Thanks.

I have been with Vonage for nearly two years and call Itay nearly every day. The rates have canged a little bit but not much in that time. (higher at the start then they went down).

In calling Italy if you call a cell phone it is much higher and always has been. In other words if you call a number such as 01139 xxwhere xx is the number it is more expensive. If it is 01139 (02) or other city code before the number it is very cheap.

Telecom Italia is very expensive for cell service and always has cost more. Make certain the number includes a city code as that is a sure tip off to a non-cell phone.

This is common in most countries outside the US. In some cases it is as much as 50x the price.

I'm actually calling Bellagio and the number is a landline, city code 031.

I figured calling a cell phone would bump things, but calling a regualr phone in a not so remote area seems pretty straight forward.

Italy (Cellular & Premium) 393, 3903, 39320, 39322-23, 39328-31, 39333-41, 39343, 39346-49, 39360-63, 39368, 39370, 39377, 39380, 39383, 39387-93, 39397

I guess that falls under the "premimum" list. Nice little town but a bit remote. I was there two weeks ago! Being at a dead end on the highway makes it a bit different. But I love to eat out by the lake. It was cool but we still ate but the water.

O haven't had occasion to call there. However the rates haven't chaged in the last couple of months. The premimum list has existed since I signed up in 2003.

I had the same problem with Alessandria land line (0131) being listed as cellular even though it was not. After numerous complaints I noticed one day that it had been removed from the cellular list and is now billed at 3c/min.
