Thanks for the info. How does the base station work? Does it stand alone somewhere, and act as a keypad and control panel in one? Or is there a way to have the control panel in, say, a basement, with a wireless keypad near the entrance door?

I put the base station in my office. It is on a desk (could wall mount it). It needs to be near an AC adaptor. You can do all the functions from the base. I also ordered a wireless keypad that i put in my foyer. It has been really great. I actually forgot to disarm the doors this morning when i let the dogs out...less than 1 minute my phone rang and it was the monitoring service.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

ive got a couple...

did you get the self monitoring or the remote monitoring?

did you get any addition sensors or plan on geting any?

i forgot but did you upgrade your old wired system or start fresh?

this sounds like a good soution, especialy when you can do a lot of things from the web interface... i had a rep contact me over the weekend (even on the 4th) to give me deatiled info on picking out what i need.

I did the self install kit. I have the central monitoring package. I purchased the smoke detector and an extra door/window sensor. I did not have an alarm system previously..so this is a new system.

Check what the discount you get on your home owners insurance. Most offer a different discount for the self monitoring and central monitoring. It ends up being just a little bit more a year for the central monitoring because of the homeowners insurance discount.

Any other questions?

I just had the alarm.com pro install system put in.

My wife used to work for ITI - GE Security Systems - and we did a little research on the control panels - the Pro system includes the "Concord Ultra" system, which is GE's top of the line master panel - sits in the basement and is controlled with a wired panel upstairs. The self-install kit is the 'Simon' Panel, which isn't bad but doesn't have all the bells and whistles and extra zones.

We had a system previously, but it was an old wireless sensor system from SecurityLink(had a wired keypad to the basement, but all the sensors were wireless) so we had to buy the new system setup for $529. You can't get this system cheaper from a dealer, we know the engineer who put the package together for Alarm.com from GE and he told us you couldn't go wrong with this since we had Vonage.

Anyway, we had the Concord Ultra panel, Alarm.com gateway, wired control panel, 3 wireless door sensors, a glass break, 2 wireless fire detectors, 2 window sensors, wine cabinet door sensor and a freeze sensor under the kitchen sink installed today.

The alarm.com site is excellent - you can arm and disarm the system, setup codes for people(like cleaners or a babysitter - and leave the wine cabinet armed, for example Smile ) - and have the system email or text message you in addition to central station monitoring. You can setup multiple notification addresses - so I can email different accounts with different events, etc. You can also add the X-10 control module to the Concord panel and control lighting, which can then be scheduled through the web page on alarm.com as well.

We are using Alarm.com as the primary notification method and only have Voip - makes Panic button calls to police or fire much more secure and reliable.

I highly recommend alarm.com and the professional service option - you will be pleased.

Replacing a wired system(with wired sensors) is even cheaper at $199.

For example, in my basement i have motion detectors that I would like armed when I am home and away. Does the GE system do this?

One more thing, who is actually doing the monitoring of the system? (From the alarm.com site they look like a middle man)

Hewinutah -

Yes, you can setup all kinds of custom settings - such as leaving sensors on and allowing for alarms or notifications if the system is disarmed. When your installing sets everything up they can customize things like Motion bypass or setup for you. The GE Concord panel is very flexible.

You can also setup items through Alarm.com instead of through the monitoring station. For example, I can have the wine cabinet sensor send me a text message when it is opened - it doesn't set off an alarm, but the activity is logged and forwarded to me - that way I know if someone opened it while I was gone...

You are correct on the monitoring - we are using a company called EdinAlarm - a local monitoring station. This would likely be the same company who comes out to install your system. Alarm.com provides the wireless gateway service that replaces the phone line as well as the email and web interface to the system.

Has anyone ever tried nextalarm.com? They charge only $8.95 per month for all inclusive monitoring and can monitor over any broadband internet connection. They say that their service is perfect for Vonage customers. They can even convert your exisiting alarm system over to their system.
Is this too good to be true? Their website makes it look like it is for real. Two UL listed monitoring stations, ect.....

Has anyone ever tried them? They look to exactly what I'm looking for.
