I keep hearing that Vonage is not a traditional telephone company and I agree but they claim to follow the regular standards on this type of spec.

Two points:

1. I don't recall seeing Vonage claim anywhere that they follow any sort of standardized caller ID specifications. They offer caller ID, and the caller ID service they offer works. It tells you who is calling and gives you the number (whether or not it has a 1 in front of it).

2. I don't recall any international standards organisation creating a display standard for caller ID numbers for calls transmitted over Voip networks. I may be mistaken, I am no expert when it comes to standards.

Out of curiosity I did some searching, and here is what I found. It may be a bit outdated:

Quote:
DATA WORDS
The data words are encoded in ASCII and represent the following
information:

o The first two words represent the month
o The next two words represent the day of the month
o The next two words represent the hour in local military time
o The next two words represent the minute after the hour
o The calling party's directory number is represented by the
remaining words in the data word field

Source: http://www.epanorama.net/documents/telecom/cid_bellcore.html

I also found mentions of caller ID transmission being standardized by ANSI and CCITT. However, NONE OF THESE DOCUMENTS stated a standardized way of displaying or transmitting the phone number information. Note the source quoted above just specifies "the remaining words in the data word field represent the calling party's directory number". This doesn't even specify how many characters could be present in this field.

To the point, do I think Vonage should consider displaying CID information in the much more popular 10 digit format? Yeah, probably. But I don't want them to spend any undue time upgrading or modifying their systems to do it. If the fix to this problem is a simple flick of some switch, then do it. But if this is an issue inherent in some of their systems, I don't believe the benefits could possibly outweigh the costs to upgrade/modify such a system. Especially if it cost more than the $15 I pay Vonage every month!

Caller ID FAQ wrote:
Yes, there is a country where things are more complicated than the UK. Most people think that Canada uses Bellcore, just like the USA. It does - almost. For some reason, the former Stentor member companies use a non-standard implementation of MDMF. Bellcore uses DN (Directory Number), usually the 10 digit number that includes the area code found in the phone book. Stentor uses DDN (Dialable Directory Number), a variable length number that is the number that must be dialed to call the other person back (ie local calls don't include area code, long distance includes the preceding "1").

I think that the Stentor solution is actually better. In the early days when Vonage required 11 digit dialing having caller ID with 11 digits simplified returning calls.

Even now saying that caller id should have only 10 digits is wrong. It totally excludes international caller ID which is becoming more common.

I think the problem here is not with Vonage not following the Bellcore tradition (I say tradition because it is apparently not a standard) but with equipment makers making poor assumptions.

That being said, I have previously posted that I think Vonage is incorrect when they send letters in the calling number field on click2call calls. I don't believe the CID standards allow those fields to be letters, but I could be wrong.
