I have a small business that I run out of my home. What advantage would I get from ordering the business plan instead of the unlimited residential plan? Also, can a fax be sent/received over Vonage without a dedicated fax line?

I don't think there's any advantage besides Vonage not switching your plan or disconnecting you if you display high amounts of business type use. business use has been explained somewhere here before though I don't recall the thread and don't have time to search for it right now.
a fax may or may not work on a "regular" line or a dedicated fax line, but the difference is, Vonage is much more willing to work with you and tweak settings if your fax line isn't faxing as opposed to your voice line not faxing. I believe some of the settings changed if you're having fax issues may have detrimental effects on voice quality. but *99 is the predial code which basically sets your line up for data transmission (see here for explanation: http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic904.html)

I will not be using my Vonage for business; but do often fax things to other members of my family, especially step kids who are in the Coast Guard, college, ect.

Should I anticipate any problems in using the fax? I just signed up for service today.

hopefully not but everyone's experiences vary, and it's highly dependant on your internet connection (perhaps moreso than the voice call even, but that's a guess)
try looking in the forum that says "Fax" for some more info.

I don't think you can fax on a standard Vonage line. I tried it (by accident) today and it would not handshake with the other end.

Vonage offers a fax line for $9.99 a month.

I decided instead to use MAXEMAIL, a sort of Voip fax service. They give me a fax number (815 area code, who cares?) and th incoming faxes are e-mailed to me as PDF files, which can be easily printed out.

I have not tried it yet, but I can scan in documents and then send them by MAXEMAIL as faxes to those few remaining people in the world (I think there are 3 left) who prefer faxes to e-mails.

The cost was $14.99 per YEAR which fits my budget.

There are other services out there (I think one called fax2mail or something) but they wanted $14.99 per MONTH. Screw that.

I think the only difference between "home" and "business" lines is the rates. I would chose "home" myself.

I think the choice of a business plan whether it is purchased, copied out of a book, or self designed really depends upon how badly you want that money from the bank. Don't plan on borrowing? It would still be a good idea to have things written down. What will you do when this or that happens, for instance. It's better to have a plan and not need it than to need a plan and not have it.

Huh?

I think the poster was referring to the two RATE SHEETS for Vonage, Residental and Business.

I don't think they were referring to a "business plan" as in how to run a business. Sound like they have that part figured out.

AFAIK, the only difference between residential and business is the rates.

If you are General Motors and call up asking for the residential plan, I suspect they will tell you that you have to get the business plan.

If you are joe contractor working from home, I think you qualify as "residential".

Yeah, I can see that now as you've pointed it out. Still a bit vague if you ask me.

You don't necessarily need to have a dedicated fax line to send faxes but some fax machines run a little too fast for Voip, this doesn't mean you can't fax but you need to tweak the adapter. Call and a rep will make the adustments needed, choose general when you call to save time Lol
