PostPosted: Tue Dec 16, 2003 5:11 pm    Post subject: Does Vonage work with Brink? Reply with quote Back to top

Hello Guy/Gal,

I have two newbiew question

1, Any one using brink security with Vonage? I have been wondering if it will work. the wire for the brink security box is connect to box outside, I am currently using a lan line for it, I am tired of high charge from the local phone company and I am thinking about disconnected from them and use Vonage instead.

2, I am think about the $24.99 plant, I wonder what else do they charges beside 24.99? what is the total due after all the non sense charge.

my local phone company charge me 31.99 for a 13.99 basic + 7.50 caller ID. about $10 non sense charge.

Any suggestion or answer is greatly appreciate.

After the $24.99 comes the $1.50 regulatory recovery fee and FET tax. My bill totals $27.24.

I have, it works fine. The number the brinks unit calls is a 1-800 so there is no need to reconfigure anything on the brinks side. The test calls work every time.

I called Vonage and had them change my packetization to 10. They told me that Brinks may need to change my baud rate to 9600. I ran the test and it didn't work. It gives me an SC error which means communications. I called Brinks and told them I needed the baud rate changed. They said they don't work with Broadband. Looks like I may be switching to ADT cos my local phone is over $40 per month and $15 sounds much better since I use a cell phone for most of my calls.

He is something to try. I had problems connecting with my DirecTV Tivo and through trial and error I found that if I hooked up a DSL Filter directly to the modem it started to work. I am interested in hearing if that works with other devices using modems too. Good luck. BTW I used a Radio Shack 2-wire DSL Filter.

Interesting

I called Brinks and told them what was happening. They initially said they don't support Broadband phone lines. I told them ADT did so I could switch to ADT. They put me on hold then said they could put a filter on the line for $70 ($25 plust $45 to install). I said no way, then they put me on hold again, and said they would do it for free. They're coming this week so I'll post an update to see if it fixes the problem.

Brinks came by Friday and here is what happened. I tested the system
by disconnecting the test lines coming into the Telco box outside,
then plugging in the Vonage Motorola box to a phone jack which made
every phone live on Vonage. The Brinks box was wired directly into
the Telco box poles. I assumed this would just like the other phones
in the house have a live connection. The Brinks tech said that's not
the case, and I disagreed. He re-wired the Brinks box directly to a
standard phone jack, and everything was fine. My Brinks system is
happy, complete with line seizure. No DSL filter required (although I
found out the system I have has one built in), and no baud rate
stepdown. So for anyone else who wishes to switch to Broadband DSL
with Brinks, it should work. The tech's explanation about the "It
won't work with Broadband" answer was, that the reps don't always know
much technically. So the good news for me anyway is, I'm
disconnecting my home phone service.

I hope that these security and other companies that rely on telephone hookups are working on reliable hardware compatible with Voip lilnes. I thought I read about a system that only uses DTMF tones to both dial and communicate, which is the type of thing that should work with just about any system. Lower baud rate, sure, but does a security system REALLY need 28K+ to say "This is 12345678, there's a fire here?" I doubt it. There's no real difference if the message takes one second to go out instead of 0.05 seconds.

Just my 2˘.
