Its unfortunate to see all of these lawsuits starting to pile up for Vonage and their 911 system. I for one did not feel misled or misinformed about their 911 service. The only room for improvement I can see, is to sign up the users automatically.

Anyways, here in Utah recently, a man died because he called 911 from his cell phone and the EMT's couldn't find him, he was VERY clear with the address, and even mentioned the apartment building he was in, but I guess that was just too confusing. I mean honestly, there wasn't anything else the guy could have done. Are states going to sue cell phone companies because of this? Also, what about all of the recent problems with the regular 911 system and the operators? One operator asking if the caller wanted him to come over and shoot her daughter because her daughter was threatening her. I heard another one recently about someone near the east coast continually hanging up on a caller because he thought it was a prank.

Sorry, I just needed to rant a little bit about our politicians who have nothing better to do than waste our tax payer dollars on something that couldn't be much more clear. I guess if they can't waste money on hookers and booze anymore, they are looking for other ways to throw it away now!

I mostly agree. Voip is a "mobile" phone so to speak, so to tell people that they can pick an area code anywhere, or bring their ATA anywhere, while at the same time expecting traditional 911 service is not using common sense.

And quite honestly, I do not feel that the LECs should be "forced" to provide access to their 911 system by competitors such as Vonage. It would be nice, though. On the other hand (devil's advocate here), the PSTN was built using public government funds and then "handed over" to the LECs, so when you look at it like this, then perhaps the LECs should have to give all equal access to 911 systems.

Nobody really expects cell phones to have the same effect with 911 as they do regular POTS lines. They shouldn't necessarily assume the same with Voip. The problem is twofold:

1) Marketing - Vonage and other companies market Voip as a replacement for your traditional phone service. Now, a "replacement" makes it sound like the "same thing" but cheaper. This will and does confuse the average consumer.

2) 911 - If real 911 is not available in your area (as it is with most Vonage areas), then the Public Service Answering Point (PSAP) is used. What is this really?? Where is it?? Nobody knows. You may be better off programming the local police, fire and ambulance into speed dial. This may be a better recommendation over the PSAP. Or have 911 be routed to a pre-saved local police department until regular 911 service is active. At least I know if I call my local police department, they can see my phone number (caller id), they record my call, and I will be calling the source, instead of some 3rd party who may need to relay information.
