PostPosted: Mon May 02, 2005 6:29 pm    Post subject: Best Setup? Reply with quote Back to top

Hello Members,

This is my first post, and I searched before asking Wink My question is I want to order Vonage and I was just curious to see what my best setup would be. I have a Toshiba modem and a Linksys WRT54G router. Should I get a PAP2 and connect it to my WRT54G or should I just get a WRT54GP2. If I get a PAP2 how would I connect it and what would I need? I have to have the phone up and running fast because I'm a loan officer and I make anywhere from 200-300 calls a day so I need the best setup.
Thanks for your help.

If you order directly from Vonage, you won't have a choice and will be stuck with the Linksys RT31P2.

If you buy retail, you can choose the PAP2 or WRT54GP2. I have used neither, but from what I understand the WRT54GP2 has some good QoS, which could help in phone call quality while using your Internet connection for other uses. The PAP2, as I understand it, does not offer this feature and has to be placed behind a router, while the WRT54GP2 can replace your current WRT54G router.

You could also get the RT31P2 and have the QoS function (though how QoS works on this router is a bit odd). You could place that in front of your existing WRT54G, or even behind it.

Like I said, though, I've never used the PAP2 or WRT54GP2.

I suggest you'd be better off with the PAP2 behind your own router. The latest Linksys firmware for your WRT54G has QOS, the Sveasoft firmware for that router has better QOS. EIther way you can update the router firmware when you want to. If you get the WRT54GP2 you cannot update the firmware. Only Vonage can do that, plus you are paying a huge premium for that router, and your perfectly good WRT54G collects dust in the closet!

I would have to agree. I prefer having a bit more control on my hardware and being able to choose what firmware to use.

My setup works flawlessly
-Linksys cable modem-->Linksys wrt54gs-->pap2+pc's+wireless pc's

I also set up my parents similar to myself
-Toshiba cable modem-->linksys wrt54g-->pap2+pc's+wireless pc's

All you techincally need to get is a pap2 (best buy, circuit city, etc), cat5 to connect to your router, and phone line to connect to house/office wiring or to phone

Thanks guys for helping decide what to purchase.
EnJaNir I am going to have the same type of setup as you did at your parents house. Can you help me with doing that, as in setting it up with the right firmware on configuring the router and the PAP2? I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

Get the PAP2. Look around online at the power of the WRT54G routers with enhanced firmware.

I really appreciate it. I'm not going to be back in town until the 12th or 13th. I also ordered my PAP2 from tigerdirect today so it should be in on time. I tried to sign up for Vonage today but it required the MAC Address from the PAP2 so I might as well wait until I get it. Once again thank you very very much.
