When you sign up with Vonage, do you get a number that is local for your area, so your neighbors, friends, and you from work don't have to call long distance to call home?
I didn't. My POTS line is still in work to be transferred. My temporary number that Vonage assigned me is in my areas code yes, but it is not a local call for my friends, neighbors, or work.
No you don't necessarily get a local number. I have tried to get a local number for three different localities in the US without success. Vonage plans to eventually have the ability to have local coverage for a greater area than they currently have, but now the local area coverage is pretty limited. The number assigned to me was in the same area code that I am in, but the number is local to a community over 300 miles out of my actual area. It is not a local number for any of our neighbors, friends, etc.
The solution for me was to port my Verizon number to Vonage and then it all works locally. (That assumes that my Verizon number will actually get ported. It just takes time and patience.)
