PostPosted: Mon May 02, 2005 2:14 pm    Post subject: Vonage Caller ID - 10 or 11 digit? Everything has a "1& Reply with quote Back to top

OK, here is my problem. When I first got Vonage I had one of the Motorola telephone adaptors. Everything was working fine as far as Caller ID was concerned. The Caller ID came in as "208-555-5555". I changed out to the new Linksys adaptor and now the Caller ID comes in as "120-855-5555-5". Even when I call in to get my voice mail the voice mail lady says the call is from 120-855-5555-5. I have about had it. I have been in the phone business in the United States and Canada for 20 plus years and Caller ID is 10 digits not 11 digits. It has always been that way by design. Standard telephone company and cellular companies are all 10 digit by CLASS standards and everything from voice mail systems to caller id boxes look for 10 digits.

Can anyone in the know at Vonage address this issue? I have opened up two trouble tickets with Vonage so far but all I get is blank stares and "what are you talking about" questions. It would be nice if the Vonage voice mail system could at least handle the "1" in front but it is designed around an industry standard - "10" not "11" digit Caller ID

there's a couple other posts about this issue, one was from late last week..

as far as Vonage is concerned, all our numbers are 11 digits, thats what they use for hteir voice mail system too, if you call in from other than *123, you will be prompted for your mailbox number and it's 11 not 10 digits.. same with CID.. I believe that Vonage used to make you dial 11 digits fora ll calls as well, and that this changed sometime in '04? I did't have the service then, but I remember looking on the website last spring ...

You are no longer dealing with a PSTN system. The telephone pool is running dry, sold out! Going to 11 digits will allow Vonage an edge by preparing to increase it's own number pool. Something the PSTN is incapable of doing. Voip and wireless phones are programmable, the PSTN system is not unless they can produce some more area codes. If 11 digits are so intolerable, go back to your current switched wires and be happy.

Could it be 11-digits, so that people, say from the UK, can access their voice message from the system. The "1" shows the call is from/about a US telephone number. Vonage does now and will continue to have accounts in other countries. I expect that trend to continue.

Just my view.

Thanks for the replys, but the issue of North American Standard Caller ID still has not been addressed. Caller ID in North America is 10 digits. Just putting a "1" in form will not give any more Area Codes. North American standard telephone devices are programmed and designed to display and react to 10 digits.

NPA-NXX-XXXX In this format we don't need to see the country code of "1"

Like somebody said above: Vonage is not under the auspices of the North American Standard Caller ID system. Vonage's system handles numbers outside of the NPA-NXX area, in Britain and soon to be other countries I am sure.

Does Vonage allow you to call British Vonage numbers without the 011 code?

My advice would be to get a new phone that can handle the extra +1 digit. All of my phones, and the caller ID software on my computer, have no trouble whatsoever handling the extra digit.

Not a real big deal, but I have a Uniden Tru8888 phone that has a feature to filter out an area code from the caller ID # when it matches what you have setup. This is not working, and I suspect it is because of the 11 digit format.

That feature on my phones also doesn't work, but it's not needed since dialing numbers on the Vonage network with/without the 1 and the area code is a non-issue. You can call locally 11 digit and be charged the same as 10 digit (local calls here are all 10 digit).
