I learned about Vonage at the CES in Vegas this year. I requested a number transfer (LNP) the next week on January 10, 2005.
As of today, May 6, 2005, I still have not had the transfer occur. I am extremely dissatisfied with Vonage so far. What is the holdup? SBC, my current provider, does not have a record of the request. So the fault is with Vonage, or with Vonage's third-party sub-contractor.
Until my number is transferred, I will not be saving any money by signing up with Vonage. Nor will I be recommending them to anyone else.
This kind of negligence is a very poor indication of how the company is run.

Exclamation Our LOA was in and approved on 12/24/04. The transfer became complete YESTERDAY, May 8th. I had pretty much decided to abandon ship, and only stayed a couple of extra weeks b/c I had already paid for another month w/my old carrier and was still researching other Voip carriers.

BTW, our transfer was from a cell provider, which I hear makes it worse. Bottom line: I think the problems may well have been old carrier and 3rd party transfer company that Vonage used (XO Communications)... but I still fault Vonage for not keeping me informed as to what was going on for 4.5 months.

Vonage received my LOA on march 11 and still waiting to hear the good news. Even worse, my old carrier disconnected the phone number on may 9th and when I contacted them they said the the number has already been transferred to a local third party company of Vonage. I guess there is not a good communication link between Vonage and their third party contractors. I hope I get my phone back alive soon...

As an update to my previous post, My transfer was official Tuesday, May 10th so the total time was just under 2 month.

Here is my experience so far. I'm a software person and know very little about hardware so getting the phone router to work with my wireless system was a challenge. Thanks to all the wonderful posts, I finally got Vonage to work and have been pleased with performance since. It took most of last weekend and many reboots for the final setup to take affect. I'm not sure why previous attempts of the final configuration didn't take, but it works now so I'm happy.

Here is my setup if others are interested:
Internet ----> Cable modem
Cable Modem ---> Wireless Router
Phone Router ---> Wireless Router on port 1

As I mentioned, I know very little about hardware but interested in learning more. Could someone explain the advantages to having the phone router behind the wireless router. What is gained, is anything lost? I'd also like to know of way to make the system better.

There is one lingering problem someone might be able to help me with. I'm unable to access the phone routers setup screen when typing http://192.168.15.1, all I get is a 'The page cannot be displayed' message. I can access it but have to drop my wireless router first so I figure there is something I need to set in that routers setup but not sure what or where to do it. Searching the forums suggested placing the phone router in the wireless router's DMZ but the setup doesn't have a place to enter information, at least that I have found. I also updated my firewall so it would recognize the address as a trusted site. Any suggestions?

My thoughts so far, I'm very pleased with performance. I know I'm very new to Vonage but the network hasn't been down once which is important since I do work for home much of the time and phone access is critical. I haven't noticed any drop in broadband performance which I thought would be big. The voice quality of the calls is superior to MCI. All in all the learning curve and trial and error setup seem to be well worth it.

I had similar problems with getting my # ported. I finally called and asked to have my Vonage account cancelled and closed out since its been 28 days and still nothing. They did mention it takes no less than 20 days to port. I basically didnt want to pay for two fone services in one month for them taking to long to move my number over. Vonage was generous enough to give me 2 months free service while the number was being ported over. As it would happen my number was moved 3 days later. I now have my same number and 1 more month of free service. Very Happy

It has now been 5 months since I requested my number to be ported over to Vonage service. Since my last post on 5/6, SBC has stated that they have not received a request for the transfer. Therefore I can only presume that Vonage (or its 3rd party) has not made the request for transfer. Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad
I am now totally dissatisfied with the Voip service from Vonage.

I was transferring from Qwest to Vonage in Colorado, and Vonage uses XO as the third party for the transfer. Here is my experience:

March 13, 2005 Awaiting Letter of Authorization
March 16, 2005 Letter of Authorization (LOA) Received
March 16, 2005 Transfer Sent to Carrier
June 3, 2005 Carrier Approved Transfer
June 3, 2005 Completed LNP Transfer

I was frustrated at first, but am very glad it is now complete, plus Vonage did give me one month free, so that helped, as I almost dropped the service. A word of advice - don't quit Vonage, as it will definitely be worth keeping it in the long run...

Maybe I'm missing something here, but couldnt you just drop/cancel your land line company and go with the Vonage assigned (virtual) number? Is getting a new Vonage # so bad? And thus you wouldnt have to pay the land line each month till the transfer took effect, if you just cancel your land line? If people are waiting 3 - 4 months for LPN process, you're either are not using Vonage much during this time, or you are - and everyone has your new Vonage number by now. I guess I dont see the big problem here...

If you cancel service with your previous provider, then you lose your original number. That's the purpose of doing a line transfer. You must keep your existing service intact until the transfer is complete.

My experience has not been a good one. The status page on my account looked like this until April 29th..

April 19, 2005 Awaiting Letter of Authorization
April 20, 2005 Letter of Authorization (LOA) Received

On April 29th I called to check on the status. At that time they informed me that my LNP was rejected because my number wasn't mine but belonged to a large corp account which it is not. It is a residential number and has been for as lons as I have had it. Vonage never sent me an email or updated the status to inform me of this. During that call they manually entered this entry on my status page:

April 29, 2005 Transfer Sent to Carrier

Needless to say after many hours on the phone with SBC and Vonage I received an email on May 20th stating:

I apologize for the confusion, I research your account and the
information that we have forward to the our carrier. It seems like
the wrong number have been forwarded. I have forward the correct information this time. Please allow 5 to 7 business days for us to get an update on your transfer.

Thank you,
Po
LNP Department

On May 27th I was told:

The carrier has issued a tentative transfer date for 5/31/2005.
Please keep in mind that this date is subject to change and is not
necessarily the date your transfer will take place. We will send you
a notification when the date is finalized by the carrier.

Sincerely,
Mary F.
LNP Group

Of course it sill hasn't taken place and there have not been any updates made to my status page. I can only assume at this point that I am simply being lied to and LNP was never sent to the carrier. Once the 20 days from the new May 20th date passes I will cancel the request and try again with the new eLNP system. Of course I expect a long battle to have that option made available on my account.

When LNP works it works well but Vonage really needs to improve their processes so people like us don't have to wait many months for mistakes made my Vonage and/or their partners.

Good luck and hope that it goes through the first time or be prepared for it to never happen.
