Hi all,
I am a new Vonage subscriber and so far like it.
I have a question regarding phone jacks. Once my number is ported, can I just plug in the adapter to a phone jack and activate all other jacks in the house? Is this a recommended method? Any harm or problems in doing this?
Thanks in advance. |

Yes, you could just get a duplex adapter, plug it into any jack and then plug your phone into the other side of the duplex adapter so you don't lose a jack.
But here is the caveat. Locate your Network Interface Device. Usually a black, grey or white box in which the telco's side and the subscribers side is connected.
You can simply pull out the little RJ-11 plug but a safer method is to open the device, and disconnect the red/green or blue/blue-white sires on the telco side, Tag the outside of the device saying that the telco side was disconnected by the customer and that re-activation should not be performed without express permission of the property owner.
You could just plug it in but telco is famous for putting an active pair on a de-activated subscriber line through the use of a thing called bridge taps. A subscriber line might terminate to more than one place, and a thing called a bridge tap is performed to get service to a location.
In that case - you could have mixed dialtone, and more destructive ring voltage being pushed AT you phone adapater. I've heard some horror stories on that, considering that ring is nominally 90V AC at 20Hz. |

Yes you can. just disconnect your incoming line from the pole. There will be a box where the main wires from outside goto. There is practically no voltage to speak of. Typically you should be looking for a green and red wire. Although other colors can be used. The point is there will be two wires to disconnect. Make sure your other lines stay connected to the box. Once thats done just go from your phone adapter or router and plug that into the nearest jack. Al your phones should now be active.
