PostPosted: Fri Apr 29, 2005 11:13 am    Post subject: multi-handset phone reccomendations? Reply with quote Back to top

I am new to Vonage and am trying to match the best possible multi-handset phone system to it and thought the some of you might have some thoughts. Here is what I need:

- single line
- no answering system required
- nice long range
- supports up to 4 hansets (including base)
- must be Wi-fi friendly.
- handset to handset intercom would be nice but not necessary
- speakphone would also be nice but not required

Shopping for feature set is easy, but it is range and quality that are the most important and only experience can really indicate which phone is best. I just bought the Uniden TRU8865 and while i love the phone's features- at the extreme ends of my house the signal occasionally breaks up.

any suggestions?

I have the VTech i5857 5.8GHz Expandable Phone System, however, it is a bit expensive...

my opinion (and search the forum for more opinions) you already have great quality. I'm not sure you'll have better success with another product.

I have the AT&T 5830 with 4 additional 5800 handsets. This meets or exceeds all of your criteria. The range is excellent. The base is on the 2nd floor of the house, with handsets on floors 1, 2, & 3. Handsets are always within range, and work a little way down the block from the house.

Last time I was at Best Buy and Costco they have superseded these models with E800 series, or something like that. I still see the 58xx series at Fry's. I just bought another handset.

I really like the Uniden 8865-2. Circuit City has it for $119 and it's occasionally on sale off of that. Best price I could find and usually beating eBay. This is a base with an additional handset. Loaded with features and you can actually use the handsets away from the base as walkie talkies. Check out all the features on this thing. It's nuts. It's true 5.8ghz. Not all of them are. Nice if you have WiFi.

See it here at c|net:

At Uniden (not all the features are listed):

doh...should have finished reading your message. You already have this unit.

I use the Motorola MD751 5.8GHz cordless telephone system. It supports up to 8 handsets with the addition of the Motorola MD71 expansion handsets.

Battery life is up to 6 hrs. on a single charge along with a host of other features.

No problems or issues so far.

I have a GE model 25840GE3... The bundle I had came with two handsets. The main basestation doesn't have a phone built in.

Works great. No static, strong signal over my house and yard (its only 1/3 acre, so its not exactly the north 40) and a good, clear sound.

at 5.8GHz, there shouldn't be any problems interfering with your Wi-Fi (802.11b and g Wi-Fi both operate at 2.4GHz). And while I have yet to test it out, I've read consumer reviews that rave about this unit's range.

As for the number of handsets... it has two... so it may support up to 4.. most of the multi-handsets I've seen support 4.

Its inexpensive and pretty much meets all your criteria.
