PostPosted: Fri Apr 29, 2005 10:55 am    Post subject: Trouble with multiple routers - DI514 & RT31P2 Reply with quote Back to top

I have a Road Runner cable connection running into a D-Link wireless router, then port 2 on the D-Link going to port 1 on the Linksys VOIP-enabled router. This lets me access the setting on the Linksys router. Port 4 on the D-Link runs to the WAN port on the Linksys.

The Linksys is in the DMZ of the D-Link and is set with DHCP server off and a Static IP internet connection.

Every thing works fine for the first 1 or 2 calls, after that any calls are unsuccessful with a beep-beep-beep... and the router says "Call Status: Invalid". After a few more tries the router says “Cannot connect to login server." Unplugging the router then plugging it back fixes the problem but then it starts over.

Is this a problem with the way I have the routers set up? Road Runner problem? Vonage problem?

Thanks

P.S. I know there are lots of other posts about this, but I would prefer not the reconfigure my set-up if I don't have to. Also, it seems to work at first so why not all the time? Road Runner blocks servers, so would they consider this a "server" - its uploading audio (and they offer their own VOIP)!

For testing purposes onmly, try it from modem > linksys, just to see if this fixes your problem, if it does then the 2 routers are fighting, and we can take it from there.

It seems to work that way. I tried about 10 calls and they all worked.

The D-Link router stops working after a minute or two when plugged into the Linksys - the exact same.

I thought you said you had Modem > Dlink > Linksys?

I put the D-Link behind the Linksys when you said to try connecting the Linksys directly to the modem

DI514

    IP - 192.168.0.1
    DHCP - ON
    DHCP RANGE - 192.168.0.100-151
    STATIC ROUTE - 192.168.0.151 (RT31P2)
    DMZ Host - Source-WAN, Destination-LAN,192.168.0.151

RT31P2

    IP - 192.168.0.151
    DHCP - OFF
    Internet Settings
    Static IP
    IP -192.168.0.151
    Subnet - 255.255.255.0
    Gateway - 192.168.0.1
DNS - 192.168.0.1 (What should this be?)

What I find weird is that it works fine, then beeps and show "invalid" on the voice status, the after saying "invalid" for a few calls it says cannot connect to login server.

Thanks for your help!

If Voip works better with Linksys ahead of Dlink, then I would switch what you have above - put the Dlink in the DMZ of the Linksys and set the DMZ IP address (e.g., 192.168.15.2) in the Linksys. On the Linksys, port forward (e.g., 0 to 65535) all ports to the DMZ (e.g., 192.168.15.2) and turn off DHCP server (but leave where ISP IP is obtained automatically). On the Dlink leave all your LAN settings as is (DHCP/Static DHCP, etc.), but on the WAN side, make the IP static with the DMZ IP address (e.g., 192.168.15.2), set the gateway and DNS to the Linksys IP address (e.g., 192.168.15.1). I have a Dlink 624 and it works great this way.

How do I access the setting on the Linksys with the D-Link firewall in between?

I don't know if that question was directed to me, but assuming it was you would access it with whatever your two subnets are. For example: http://192.168.15.1 for the Voip Rtr and http://192.168.0.1 for the LAN rtr.

If it is set up correctly, you should be able to get to both from a terminal at the LAN rtr (in this case the 192.168.0.1 subnet).
