Post subject: UNIDEN CLX485
Does anyone have the new Uniden CLX485 5.8GHz phone system? If so, how does it work? Does it work well with wireless-g routers? Does it have a voice-mail indicator?

I just got it a week ago to replace my current 2.4 Ghz phone.
Unfortunately, I'm still waiting on the availability of the TCX440 expansion sets before I swap the old phones out. What little use I've had with the new phone has been great, though. The battery life seems to be pretty good and it's got tons of cool features.
They are really hard to find. I got mine at Best Buy, which is the only place I've seen them. Most other places, even web retailers, don't even list it. Or they list that it won't be available until the end of May (like the TCX440s I'm waiting on
).
Regarding the voice-mail indicator, I'm not sure. I don't think it has it. At least the manual makes no mention of this feature. I think they assume that since you have a built in answering machine, there's no reason to also have voice mail. The CLX465 does have this feature. It's essentially the same thing as the CLX485 minus the answering machine.
This phone works well with my Netgear WGR624 (SuperG/108g) router. I had a plain old 54g (Netgear WGR614) until about a month and a half ago. Once I switched to the SuperG, my 2.4Ghz phone system sounded horrible... cutting in and out constantly. The phone batteries drained really quickly, too (usually, in a matter of minutes). I tried the CLX485 with it and the sound was crystal clear. I'm sure it would work great with any other 54g router, as well.
So far I would recommend this phone. I'm just concerned about the availability. I know it's relatively new, but it seems like nobody is carrying it.

No it does not work with vonage's voice mail. The phone works great with Linksys WRT54GP2. I did order the an additional handsets from bestbuy.com.com. They did charge my credit card yesterday(May6) for the phone so maybe they will be shipping soon.

I finally purchased this phone from Best Buy and it's better than the 2.4 ghz system that it replaced as far as cordless call clarity and not having interference from my wireless router. However it doesn't have a voice-mail light indicator since it has the built-in answering machine. Also it doesn't translate the caller ID of the incoming call to the names in your phone book. What's silly is that it WILL translate the number and play a special ring-tone, but it won't display the name you've entered. That's my biggest disappointment with this system.

yes, the number is the same in the phonbook as what's shown on the caller id. It shows the picture I've assigned and plays the ring-tone I've assigned. Just doesn't show the name that I've assigned to that number. Says "unknown" or "out of area". Are you sure yours isn't showing what's being sent with the caller id? Have you confirmed it's showing the name you entered in your phonebook on calls that don't have a name being sent via the caller id?

Post subject: range/reception?
Hey guys,
I just got the CLX485 last night (waited the 15 hours to charge it) and now I'm doing some testing. Everything seems great, however by accident I just tested range. I walked through my house away from the base unit (in the office with the computer) and out into the back yard. I'd say maybe 100 feet away, say 150 to be conservative. The reception started degrading very quickly.
What have you guys noticed with the reception/range of this phone? If it really is this bad, this might be going back to Best Buy later tonight.
Thanks,
Natasha

I have no friends so I'm never on the phone, but my wife is always on it and she does hear it "get low" sounding sometimes.
If you do return the phone, look at this one

I've been using this phone system for a few weeks now and I'm very happy with it. It's certainly not perfect, but the features it does have are great.
As was mentioned before, the caller ID always shows the name that comes over caller ID, rather than the name stored in the contacts. Another annoying limitation is that there doesn't seem to be a way to copy recorded ring-tones. Ring tones need to be re-recorded on each individual hand set. As well, the windows application for configuring the phone (over the USB connection) doesn't have a way to copy ring tones. You can copy images but no ring tones.
I haven't really noticed any problems with the range. However, I don't have a very large home, so my needs are not great. The battery life seems to be much better than my previous set (Motorola MD481 and M41s). Although, that may be the result of the switch to 5.8 GHz.
One feature I really like is that all handsets blink when there is a message. So, I can notice there's a message without looking at the base.
Overall, I'm very please with the phone.
