1) I don't use the answering machine so I can't comment.

2) The callerid for me stays on the screen until I answer. I'm not sure if there are some settngs you can adjust, but did you download the software program and configure the phone system through your PC? Might be worth a few minutes poking around there. Sounds like you need to configure something or you have a bad unit.

I had a problem where my GE phone would barely ring at all, and caller id would disappear after a split second. After Vonage upped the "voltage" (according to tech support) on my rt31p2, it works almost perfect now.

that's an old post of mine, I now have the uniden 8860. but it may be worth checking out.

Natasha,

I hope you don't mind that we keep asking you queations.

Your comment here has me curious....

What do you use for voice mail? Do you subscribe to a
voice mail service, and if so, does this unit have a voice mail
indicator? I believe in an earlier post either you or someone
else said this phone does NOT have a voicemail service indicator,
but your comment that I quoted has prompted me to ask again.

Also, I am guessing if anyone was to buy this phone and
had a voicemail subscription through their phone company
they could turn the answering machine off? Can you
override the answering machine if needed?

Thanks for helping us out here.

No worries, just hate answering questions twice. I subscribe to voicemail with my phone company. Answering machine is turned off. No voicemail indicator. I pick up the handset and I get the special tone that says there is voicemail.

You can buy aftermarket voicemail indicators for about $20 (google it) which light up. I personally (at least at home) only check voicemail once or twice a day. People know if its urgent, call my cell.

Going back to questions regarding ringtones...

The specs on this phone say:

Recordable/Preset Ringer Tones

One of the comments in this thread stated it
was difficult downloading ringtones to the phone.

I would also guess you can't take a pre-recorded
.WAV file that you downloaded off the Internet and
simply transfer it to the phone as a ringtone.

How do you record your own ringtones then?

Is it simply like a tape recorder where you record the
ringtone using the phone's microphone and then
store it?

Also, is the ringtone volume LOUD at its highest
setting? I would love to be able to hear it from
across the house if needed.

I love the fact that this phone has the possibility of
putting in your own customized ringtones, but not
certain how it is done and what the limitations are.

Thanks in advance. You guys have been great!

NJRonbo,

Ring tones are recorded directly onto the handsets like a tape recorder. The base doesn't support custom ring tones (although it has a similar set of pre-set ring tones to choose from).

The annoying part is that there is no way to copy the ring tones between handsets, so you have to re-record the ring tones for each handset if you want them to match. As you mentioned, there is also no way to load them from the computer as WAV files (or any other format).

It's a little odd considering that almost everything else can be copied. I think I had to copy photos through the computer. But I don't understand why they didn't make it so that ring tones could be copied.

i haven't tried yet, but my set came with a dual 1/8" plug (male) cable for recording purposes. i assume i can plug this into my ipod or computer and record the exact portion of an mp3 or audio file that i want, giving each phone the exact same ringtone. i'll try it this weekend, but it should work based on the instructions.

Ooh, that's much better than using a microphone.

If it can be plugged directly into the audio out of a
computer or iPod there's the opportunity for a much
cleaner ringtone.

Let us know how you do with this.

I bought the uniden 8860-2 at Costco for $69.99 - YES 2 PHONES FOR $70 AND NO REBATES for my Vonage line!!!!

I have my base station in my server room, which also contains my 2.4 ghz wireless router and seem to have no ill effects on range - I have a 2/3 acre lot and can walk around it and into my neighbors house with no noticable call degredation.

Also, I don't use it for voice mail. I have Vonage email me when I receive a call and then go to the website to listen - because I travel.

The deal was so good, my wife bought another 8860-2 for her POTS line. So running two sets of them seem to not cause problems either.

YMMV
